Should I use my AP Biology credit?

I took AP Bio and got a 4 on the test. At UMD, this would get me out of Bio 105. I'm debating whether I should use it or not. I don't know if I feel comfortable enough with the information. I would like to go to med or vet school, and I'm not sure if not taking the class will harm my performance. What if I forget the information and get a lower GPA in a higher level class? I was also in a biomedical sciences program at my high school that gave me college credit for bio from Stevenson University. It would also get me out of Bio 105. I just don't know if I feel prepared enough. My dad is really angry that I am debating this. He thinks I should use the credit and save some money. I just don't want to screw myself over in the future.

I always recommend that only those that scored a 5 on the AP exam take credit for the course. The way these exams are graded, you can sometimes score a 4 while missing half of the questions! Maryland currently gives some credit for 4’s (this could change soon) but if I were you, I’d take the class. Also I’m not sure what you mean by “save some money”. If you are a full time student, it’s not going to make much of a difference.

I think he is mad about the $90 or so that we spent on the test. Also, I thought you had to pay for each individual class? I guess I was wrong. I know that you do need to pay a lab fee though.

IMO, I would take the credit for BSCI105. This is because as a pre-med you will (or at least it is strongly recommended) take classes like BSCI222(genetics), BSCI223 (Microbio), BSCI330 (cell bio) and BSCI440 (Mamalian Physiology). So the point is that you will get the necessary instruction of material taught in BSCI105 in greater detail by taking upper level classes, so it’s kind of pointless to retake it.

But wouldn’t you need the base knowledge provided from BSCI105 for those upper level courses? I just don’t know how much I will be able to remember.

My daughter, who is a bio major, recommends it. She got a 4 on her AP bio exam (she did not study for it.) She landed up with an A in BSCI106H.

That’s good to hear, but still, I feel like I won’t be prepared for the upper level molecular bio classes. Isn’t bio105 the molecular/cell part of bio, and bio106 more ecology/evolution? A grade in one does not really tell how well you know the info from the other.
