Should I wait till August to buy a college laptop?

Have any of you heard that there will be new laptops coming out between now and August? I want to get the best one available.

I have no price limit, and will not need it during the summer.

When do most new models come out anyway?

The mentality that most people recommend you hold is "if you need it now, get it now - if you can wait, wait" That being said, be aware that Montevina, the new Centrino 2 platform (chipset update) is coming out as well as more powerful and power efficient Penryn processors.

If you are into Macs, there are rumors circulating about a possible case redesign of the macbook and macbook pro, creating a more uniform product offering from Apple. And if you can find an older laptop that will suffice for a year - as I am doing - Nehalem is scheduled for end of this year, early next year and promises to be what the Core processing architecture was the the Pentium 4 NetBurst architecture. In the end, it's all about what you need and what you want to wait for.

If you are getting a Mac then it won't matter if you get one now or wait, but if you want a PC but one NOW and make sure it does NOT have Vista. It should have XP. Otherwise you'll have a lot of problems.

I disagree, there's a rumor that there will be some sort of mac update this summer and if you want to take advantage of student specials like a free ipod, then I would wait until the summer for a mac.

they're pulling XP off the market...don't get it...vista is fine.

I have to disagree with that...Vista came on my laptop a few months back, it was horrendous. I installed XP ASAP.

Vista is annoying - esp all the constant confirmations for admin privileges and driver issues, but overall it's not as bad as some say (at least in my experience). I can bear with it, although im getting a macbook pro this summer.

you can change that admin thingy.

Vista is not as bad as people make it out to be.. don't listen to the horror stories lol

I dont see why people hate vista so much...I'm running it fine on a 6 year old computer, any new computer should be able to handle it

But I would wait if you don't need it now, since there will be newer processors out on the market by the end of summer.

Vista, IMO, isn't that bad. The only main issue I have had with it is that it consumes ram like there's no tomorrow. I had to upgrade from a 1gb to a 3gb, and the upshot is a much snappier OS. Seriously, 1gb won't do.

Yeah I don't understand why people hate Vista so much. I find it perfectly fine, and enjoy the new features it offers. But yeah, definitely turn off the Admin confirmations that keep popping up and make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM.

At least 2gb? That's a lot for just a minimum. It will be put to better use in XP, so I was wondering, can I get a vista loaded computer and then remove vista and put xp on it?

Dell will be selling computers with windows XP on them past the XP cut-off date (support for XP won't end until around 2010 though, so no worries there and I woudlen't be surprised if that was extended).

Though, it seems annoying to buy a computer with vista on it, then pay for XP after you just paid for vista :S

EDIT: I personally run linux. :)

One problem with waiting til August is you'll hit the rush. That will potentially cause your computer to take longer to be processed and shipped.

My parents bought their new laptop first week of August last year. It took until at least the end of the month if longer than that to arrive. OTOH, I ordered mine (same model) at the end of May last year and it arrived in 4 days over a weekend :)

Waiting never hurts. If you wanted the newest and the fastest, wait, but if you do wait, make sure you wait for something to come out. In the Apple line, they will hopefully update the macbook pro, but there are people saying that they won't. Intel is scheduled to release a new chipset during the first month of summer, so I would expect to see some sort of upgrade from them, and on top of that, apple offers college things. If you are going with someone else, just go with what you want.

Linux FTW.

And for the Vista people: Windows itself sees how bad Vista is and is doing two things about it. 1) Extending/extended the support and sell dates of XP and 2) creating the "Vista Killer" Windows 7. Vista is such a big flop that they are going to try to roll out a new OS soon enough to not have too many losses.

Windows 7 is in no way a "Vista Killer"...

It's just the next windows system, originally Vista was scheduled to come out just a few years after XP, but XP needed so much work with the service packs they pushed back Vista.

I would wait. I ordered my laptop (Macbook Pro) in August, and it came in about 2 weeks or less. I believe there was a Macbook (Pro) update during last summer (it might have been before summer, i can't remember exactly), so it was worth the wait.

There was a macbook pro update earlier this year, but supposedly there will be a new design this summer along with integrating the new intel chipset too.

Does anyone know when the nanos will be part of the students package (as in the discount they give)?
