I am a rising senior who wants to apply Early Action the the University of Chicago. However, my Junior year grades were not very good. Second semester I had 2 A's, 2 B's, 1 B+, and a C that I tried very hard to improve but wasn't able to. My GPA is currently a 3.7065 and we don't weight grades. I am also 22 out of 152. Given the school and my current stats, would it reflect poorly to apply Early? Any opinion or advice is appreciated! :)

What classes did you get those grades in? Are you at a competitive school (you being in the top 15% even with a C)?

The C was in Honors Advanced Algebra (Alg 2), the B’s were in Spanish 4 and Honors Trigonometry. The B was consistent for the year in Spanish, Trig is only a semester class. The B+ was in a Latin class that I took online (89. 96%) for 1 semester to fill a class I dropped first semester [Physics, which I finished with a B- (I dropped it due to being the only one not in Calculus and didn’t feel like I was adequately prepared and wasn’t really absorbing what I needed to despite extra help from the teacher and classmates)]. The A’s were in Honors American Literature (required for the state) and AP US History (all year). First semester I also had Economics (A), Expository Writing (A, and was dual enrolled with a local tech school), and my Algebra grade was a B-. My school is very small and in Wisconsin, we only have 750 students, so no it is not competitive. Prior to this year, I had all A’s or A-'s in all offered honors classes and regular classes.

I would hold off, a strong mid-year report would benefit you…

^ I agree. Stay on top of it first semester of senior year and you’ll be alright.

Thanks for the input! I was interested in applying Early to show my interest in the school. I’m also planning to retake my ACT in September so that could help (I scored a 28 but am hoping to bump it up a couple of points.)

Yes wait. Your scenario is the exact one why you should crush your first semester Senior grades and boost your ACT. They will be much more beneficial to you than an EA app. Good luck.

If you had stronger test scores I would say go ahead with EA (my D got in EA with a 3.7 overall gpa last year, but very strong test scores). They defer an awful lot of students from the EA to regular pool anyway. But given your test scores, I would say you risk outright rejection with a poor 2nd semester junior year showing in grades and an ACT of 28. I have to say, though… even a 30 ACT with a 3.7 is going to be very difficult to get acceptance at U of C. They had over 30,000 applicants last year. For 2012, the 50% ACT composite range was 31 - 34. So if you gain two points to a 30, that puts you in the bottom 25% for 2012 admitted class (and I think the 2013 class was stronger, although I haven’t seen statistics yet).

My school doesn’t finish the first semester until mid-January, so our grades aren’t final until then. Will that affect my RD application?

Definitely wait to apply and do take well in your senior year.
