My health insurance is under Kaiser, and since it's only 4.3 miles away, I was wondering if it's worth switching to SHIP. Can anyone help me out? :)

I don’t know anyone who uses SHIP. Since you already have medical insurance, SHIP would be a waste of money. If you waive SHIP, a clinic visit at the Ashe student center (right next to the gym, about 5-7 minutes walking distance from the dorms) will cost a “nominal fee” (like $12ish). If you have anything big, your insurance should cover emergencies.

Waive ship. It sucks. Long wait time and really hard to get appointment. My biggest annoyance with them is their working hours. It’s normally around 8am-5pm and they are NOT open on weekends. Rather inconvenient. (Assuming you even got the appointment for that week, let alone the next two weeks.)

Knew someone who got like the flu or something. They got told to just take a couple days off from school. Would not even prescribe anything to alleviate congestion or their fever.

I went to Ashe twice this past year. The first time, the doctor gave me antibiotics. Whatever I had didn’t go away. Then he said he didn’t know what it was, said it was impossible to swab for cultures because it was a clinic, and proceeded to treat for two probable causes by giving me a stronger antibiotic and an antihistamine. Second time, the doctor just told me to get bedrest. It was midterms week. ■■■.

I understand that those are normal working hours, but those also happen to be the hours that students have classes. Given the wait time, some of us already have to suffer enough to go to class and make it to Ashe.

I’ve never had a problem making appointments, I usually opt for the same day appointment option and get it right away.

i would waive it!!! more money for books =] ship is approx 1100 for the year right? i waived it last yr, but thankfully i didnt need emergency or pharmaceutical care.

Emergencies, your own medical insurance should cover you. Pharmacy, just go down to the CVS in Westwood, 10-15 minute walk from Ashe clinic.

so you have to have some type of insurance in order to attend ucla? :/

cuz i dont have any insurance…xD

EDIT:

what would be a better insurance that costs less

How do you go about waiving it?

I know it’s none of my business, but I have to comment. If the Kaiser coverage satisfies the requirement to waive ship , you won’t be any worse off, but all the complaints above

are expected and acceptable medical care. you can also pay cash to many doctors if you would like to be able to … have more control over non life threatening services.
