Should I waste my Early decision on Cornell?

I have a pretty low GPA (88.8), but I go to a specialized school (top 100.) I have a few months of debate team for EC, 200 hours of hospital volunteering, and a year of library monitoring. I received a 730 for CR and 720 for Math. I am taking several Sat2s next week. I also received a 4 for European history, a 4 for US history and a 5 for Biology. I am currently taking BC calculus and I plan to apply for Biology. Should I waste my ED with these credentials.

What’s your rank? Do you have any hooks? (URM, legacy, etc)

I am not sure what my rank is, my graduating class is almost 1300 people. I do not have any hooks given that my parents are immigrants from the Soviet Union.

Hmm… Well, I think it all depends on your rank and SAT II scores, because, even though your gpa is low, if your rank is in the top 5% or higher, than it won’t be such a big deal.

Also, is your gpa an upward trend?

My GPA I would say was upward, yes. I doubt my class rank is anywhere near top 5%. It is a very hard school though. Since I only have one ED, I have to spend it wisely. Perhaps to something like NYU instead?

If your junior gpa is more than a 3.7, I’d say take the risk and go ED to Cornell. If not, then NYU is probably a better option…

I think your GPA will kill your chance. SAT is pretty good, and SAT II’s have minimal impact.

But you never know. If you can write a killer essay, then who knows, you may get in,

So should I save my ED for another school?

@BKtech

It’s not really a matter of “wasting”…

If you like Cornell, and you can’t imagine going anywhere else, then ED is for you…

If you are erring… then I suggest you reconsider using ED or EA somewhere else.

Well I think it truly matters where you want to go, do you have the credentials for Cornell ED? I think so, but if you have any hesitation whether or not you would enjoy attending Cornell, don’t do it.

Honestly I want a college where I can be in a very enriching environment. Cornell seems to be the only school that can offer this and still be in my reach.

Not if you think it’d be a waste.

I think his main concern is that he thinks his gpa will kill his chances and that there’d be no point in even applying ED…

I’d say go for it. :)

More that I can spend my ED on something like NYU instead.
