should I withdraw from a course?

I am currently taking an advance econ class (I am majoring in econ) and we just had a midterm recently. They havent given us back our midterm grades but I believe that I didnt do that well in that midterm. (Probably a D or a C). I can still get a B-, but it will be very hard especially because I heard that the prof gives really hard final exam.

I am almost done with my degree and I can still withdraw from that course because I am taking an overload this semester. My lowest grade so far is a B+. Do you think I should drop this course? I am planning to apply to grad school. I understand that getting a W in an advance econ class will be very bad for me.. but getting a D or C is just as bad. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks.

Yeah you can withdraw, just make sure to take it again and do very well.

unfortunately i cannot take that course again because it is not offered until next year,. (I am graduating this year)

Hmm... does your school offer some sort of grade forgiveness policy? Try and get at least a C and then do the grade forgiveness and redo it the next year, maybe? I think that's what I would do. In the meanwhile, destroy the upcoming tests to keep the grade you already have.

A "W" is better than a "D" for sure, and if it's only one, I wouldn't sweat the "W"....Colleges have them for a reason; they recognize the need.

You should consult an academic advisor at your school, who will know your exact situation and options better.

But if you do not need this class for graduation, then a W might possibly be a lot better than a C or D. People might overlook the W in an advanced elective course, but the major hit on your GPA would be far more noticable.

hot_choco do NOT withdraw from the class just because you are worried of recieving a B. Look, I've been on this many times and I too have been concerned with keep my G.P.A. near perfect. If you continue on this path, (dropping a classes in fear you might get a B) then when will you graduate? In college, you are not supposed to be the master of all things. My professor once offered some valuable advice: "what would colleges rather see.... many W's or a B"? Think about it. Maybe this might have been the first time that you have or are considering withdrawing from the class, but if you need this class for you degree, withdrawing will simply delay your graduation (you also mentioned that this class will not be offered for some time), and you've come so far why start all over.

Talk to an advisor.

If you are going to get a D or below drop the class like a hot potato. If you are getting a C or B, keep the class. Most normal college students have a couple of Ws on their transcripts.
