I'm taking 17 credits in the fall (Orgo, Calc III, intro to engineering class,UROP, and a couple seminars.) So only 14 are graded classes. The rest are credit/no credit. I've usually had no problem with a lot of work, but will I have time to work with this schedule? I mean, I want to have a life and don't want to spend all my time studying or working. But then again, it'd be really nice to have a some pocket money for school!!!!

How dire is your financial situation? Are you on your own financially or do you have parental help? That pretty much decides it. I personally am completely on my own and am forced to work around 30 hrs/week during school to support myself. If you have help I’d still get a job and do like 10-12 hours a week but it’s definitely more for like hey, let’s get Cottage Inn (open til 4 AM, damn good pizza).

If you are in a position where you NEED pocket money for school, chances are you were given a work/study award as part of your financial aid package. If you check and realize that you were, why not just do UROP for work/study instead of credit? This way you can hit two birds with one stone.

If you were not given work/study, then you should self-assess you time management skills, your goals, and your aptitude for chemistry (your hardest class).

I’m curious if you didn’t work all Summer? That would have been the best approach to have $ and then be able to concentrate on your classes and have a decent amount of social time. If you can swing Doctor’s UROP idea that would be great too.

My son works 8-10 hrs a week and sometimes even that can be a bit tough if he has more than 16 credits. (he works full time in the summer too). If you look for work, try to find a low-demand job with a reasonably flexible employer and remember the value/priority is the education. Eg., did you work during hs and maintain very high grades? Are you good at juggling and setting priorities? If so, work a little too … It may actually help you stay organized as you may be more likely to work ahead but if it isn’t working out, be quick to know your limits.

kmcmom… Where did your son work? Mine is trying to debate between dining hall job and a lab assistant… Also, taking Orgo and Cal 3 , Engr 101 and Engr 110.
