I know UC's or CSU's don't accept F's but I happen to be the one that got one. I know it probably won't make a difference if I write a letter to the colleges explaining why I got an F in math..but I heard that some have done that and they got accepted. Is that true? Should I write to them? Will they consider accepting me or is it a waste of time? Will it make a difference?

• D/F and repeated grades: Students who receive D and F grades in ”A- G” courses must repeat
those courses with grades of C or better. In the subject areas of mathematics, chemistry and foreign
language, however, a D or F grade can be “validated” by earning a C grade or better in the second
semester or more advanced level in the same subject. Courses that have been “validated” with a
more advanced-level course cannot be subsequently repeated for a better grade. Consult with the
Office of Admissions/Relations with Schools and Colleges or your counselor to determine how D or F
grades can be improved and how the University will use them in evaluating your scholarship record.
Grades will not be used for repeated courses in which you initially received a C or better.

-Hope it helps…

unless there was a valid reason like severe sickness or family problems do not write a letter. ADCOMS are not looking for excuses.

You better have a really good reason for getting that grade. I think writing a letter will come across as ass-kissing. Don’t do it. Best of luck.

Gus2009 is correct. Most admissions websites say to notify them if there is a change in grades. In most, cases, they will tell you what you need to do to keep your admission.
If it were me, I’d call the admissions office first and find out what they require from you before I write the letter. You need to show that you care, if you do nothing, and a D or F shows up on your final transcript, there is a good chance of recision. Good luck.

A letter won’t matter. Nor will calling the admissions office. If you are instate, you need to go immediately and talk to your GC. The GC will tell you whether you can take an online course or any other course between now and the fall to resolve this. Generally speaking a non passing grade in a required A-G course is a big problem: see above post. A letter or call won’t matter.
This isn’t a private school. They could care less that you care. The rules are the rules.

I strongly disagree. Doing nothing is almost a guarantee reject for a senior at a UC. Doing something, anything, means a possible reprieve (but unlikely without a good excuse). This IS the time to be proactive. (I also recommended retaking the class in another thread, but even that should be put in the letter.)

good question. i have a similar one as well. i got a D my junior year in calculus and in my applications, i noted all the factors why i got that D in the extra information section (they are all legit and i wasn’t ass-kissing). will that be enough or do i still have to send the college a written statement even though application deadlines are way over?
