Should I...?

Maybe...
I mean, are there any other performing arts boarding high schools besides Interlochen, Walnut Hill and Idyllwild Arts?

^^^Those are the "big three" of boarding schools for performing arts. However, some prep boarding schools have strong arts programs and that is another option. One example: Choate. But many boarding schools may want you to attend for at least two years and you would have to weigh if you want to do that and extend your high school years or simply stay where you are at and do what you can to supplement school and get the rest at college and in summer. There is the post graduate high school program at Interlochen too.

So I have applied to three of the four schools so far (the last one doesn't require an app till March) and I am going up to do one audition for Interlochen very very soon. Unfortunately because of the economy and school, it is going to be impossible to go to any other school besides IAA so I have to send in videos to the other schools.

I am just getting nervous about the auditions :/

I have a bunch of songs that I like but I am just wondering if the songs that I like are overdone...
So far I have these on my list:
Shy
Disneyland
What Did I Have That I Dont Have
Lights In the Piazza
Somewhere Thats Green
Not For the Life of Me
Astonishing

My vocal range goes from Low Alto to Mezzo...I am really good at ballads in those ranges.
I can also do a little soprano, I took classical voice lessons at Peabody so I can use my upper range in a song if it is too far past my break.

And I am seriously stressing over my monologues.
I was thinking about a dramatic monologue from classical repotoire -Antigone (Brecht's version) because one has to be dramatic and at the other schools I applied to, they want a classical monologue. So this would get rid of that requirement....
And I am just looking through plays to find comedic monologues. My library has a terrible play collection...they have about 20 plays, most of them require dialect and I really want to stay away from those...

Any Advice?

Some of these songs are quite overdone. But since your audition is coming up very soon, I certainly wouldn't suggest that you try to master new material right now. 2 of your songs -- Disneyland and What Did I Have -- are heard less frequently than the others you listed. At this late date, it's more important that you are completely comfortable with your material.

Regarding monologues -- do a search on the internet -- "female comedy monologues" should turn up quite a few. Find several that you like, and then you can purchase the whole play from an internet site like Drama Book Store. Even Amazon has many scripts. It's really important to read the whole play, so you understand your character.

I think onstage just gave you EXCELLENT advice. I think What Did I Have That I Don't Have is the least overdone on that list. It is a good song and has good acting choices. Even though the songs on your list are overdone (some are VERY overdone), I think that auditioning for a high school program or a summer high school program is going to be more forgiving of overdone material than applying to college. And the most important thing is that you show yourself the best you can, even more than which songs you chose. Make sure to ACT the song.

I agree about searching the internet or a book store for monologues from plays....not relying on your school library and once you land on a suitable one, then buy the play. But peruse many monologues first.

Just curious...Light in the Piazza seems to be a stretch for someone who is a "low alto to mezzo". I believe this song is best suited for a more bright gentle soprano. It is also VERY difficult to nail the acting component given the special nature of the character singing it. Be careful not to put something on your list, or in your book, unless you are sure you are comfortable singing it properly.
Best of luck!

I was just accepted @ Interlochen for theatre arts :)! I am so happy - but now my parents want to just drop the other apps since Interlochen was my first choice. I just think that maybe I should hold out for Idyllwild…
I want to go to UMich for a BFA in MT (I visited the campus and saw a few classes and now I am determined to go there now), so which school is better? I am willing to go anywhere to increase my chances.

Michigan is a total crapshoot…you could be the most talented person ever and still not get in. Either of those schools would prepare you well I’m sure, but I would choose Interlochen. Still, all the preparation in the world doesn’t guarantee Michigan, no matter how talented you are, so I would suggest not being so determined on going there and finding more schools that you would be just as happy at.

all three boarding schools are great and will train you well. It more depends on what atmosphere you prefer. Interlochen might be more regimented while Idyllwild has a bit more freedom . We did Idyllwild for 2 years and received great instruction. Kids get in to Mich just fine. Also keep in mind the academic side…Idyllwild no longer offers AP…I’m not sure about the others. Your GPA is pretty important when it comes down to places like UMich. Wherever you go, keep the grades up and challenge yourself as much as the school will allow academically. Your schedule is very very full at these schools…similar to a college load…so it is awesome training for what is to come. Good luck

My D is a theatre major at Interlochen Arts Academy. After attending musical theatre summer programs at Interlochen for 2 years, she begged to go to high school there & is now in a junior (2nd year at Interlochen). The theatre classes are amazing, with several offered for those students more interested in musical theatre vs. straight acting. They do a great job helping kids prepare for college auditions & take them to Chicago for Unifieds. We are from a very rural area & the MT world is quite new to us. Many of her classmates have been accepted to what is considered the “top” MT programs for college, but she has been shocked to hear that some kids, who she feels are “the best of the best”, have been declined at certain very selective schools. Guess that just reinforces what I’ve so often read on this website about the unpredictibility of MT auditions. Best of luck at Interlochen, BwayRO2010!!! It really is a great place and your life will never be the same!

Did you receive your acceptance through email or mail? I haven’t heard anything yet… :S but I guess its cause I had to send some more financial statements cause I applied for FA which could have meant that it took longer for them to present my application to the committee, and also cause I live in ASIA…

Well anyways, congratulations!! I hope to be accepted too! (and get enough FA to go along with it! :P) x

I was told unofficially about two weeks after I visited and I just received written confirmation in the mail - FA package will be here by Fri…

you should probably call them - if you bug em enough they will tell you ASAP.
Good Luck  I’ve got my fingers crossed for ya!

What do you mean by unofficially? Did you audition on campus btw? Cause if you did, LUCKY YOU!!! Cause I really couldn’t travel all the way there, I sent in a video audition, and it’s really really worrying me cause now I’m having doubts about it :S You also had your interview there as well right? I’m supposed to be having a telephone interview soon but the lady I’ve been exchanging emails with hasn’t been replying anymore (…:S?) so I have to wait until another admissions counselor comes back on Monday to reply them.

Do you know how many they are taking and how many auditioned? I haven’t always been confident about stuff like this but yea I guess I’m just paranoid :stuck_out_tongue: xx

I was told by phone first - then I got a letter from them. I did the campus audition & interview there, haha my parents were like this is your birthday for the next 10 years - don’t expect anything else from us. My mom took off work and we got a friend to get us airfare for really cheap (apparently no one wants to go to Mich in Feb :P).

I thought they did not meet on Mondays…isn’t the school week Tues to Sat? Oh and the interview is just with Jody and since there were like 5 of us (@ the campus audition) we each only got 20 mins which was not a lot - you would probably get more time on the phone which is a very good thing - tell them everything, especially leadership roles and community service. They said they were looking for well rounded people - not just kids who only care about their craft because EVERYONE says that they are dedicated - so be different from the other applicants…thats my advice when you interview…don’t be like “I HAVE TO GO HERE”. One girl in my group said that  - again - its a given that you really want to go there because you are applying for senior year…just be different and refreshing. I’m sure you will be fine.

I have no idea the numbers they take or accept or reject…maybe it will be on the site?

Thanks!! Your information is so informative  I’m just really really really really scared of being rejected, cause my current school isn’t working out and stuff… :S and if I were to be rejected, I’d have to stay here for Senior year. Would you consider yourself a strong actor singer or dancer? I would say my dancing is the weakest out of the bunch… but for the audition they didn’t need a dance audition right?
How many girls and guys were in your audition group? Did you get to hear the others?

Sorry for all these questions btw. I’m just so curious and it’s just so worry-some at the same time :frowning:
x

Haha I had all the same questions, so no worries
I am a strong singer and actress - singing is most definitely my “fortee” out of the two, I guess. I am not the best dancer but I can learn movement (after a while haha)
No, there was no dance audition - thank goodness!
We had five in our group - four were girls - the one guy was auditioning for a PG year There were three of us for senior year and one for freshman year.

You do not get to hear the others unless they want you to - we all went into a practice room and did scales together (some of them sang their songs lightly after the warmup) and then we auditioned for Dr. Montee - he was actually pretty cool about the audition and not intimidating at all.

Is that the kind of info you wanted?

Yes that info was helpful. Thanks! :D

I’m going to be hearing back from them next week about their decision. They don’t need a phone interview with me anymore… :S Not sure if that is a bad sign or a good sign. Wish me luck? :S

I guess it would have been waaay better to audition on campus. Cause my video is a bit restricting, and it also depends on the quality of the video… AND because its not in front of them, there isn’t that much pressure upon us, so I have a feeling that my video didn’t really fulfill my full potential.

Yes. I am paranoid :S I question myself all the time :(

Btw BwayRO2010, I just PMed you
