Should Jews boycott U Michigan

Alternatively, maybe the thread title should have been less leading and incendiary, like “Prof Refuses to Write LoR for Student to Study in Israel. Thoughts?” Just sayin’

Personally I would not boycott a huge university with thousands of professors based on the unsactioned acts of two of them.

@skieurope

Let me explain again in plain English since you missed my subtle inference.

The word Jew is inflammatory when used by a non-Jew. Kind of like I would never use the N word.

Get it now?

@happy1

No one is going to boycott Michigan unless they are legacy at the OSU.

@NoKillli Perhaps you did not mean that as condescending as it sounded to me, but no need to mansplain; even as a non-native English-speaker, I got it the first time.

My point was, the headline posted, and your “improvement” are both less than ideal (IMO of course)

@NoKillli I was simply responding to the title of the thread.

The university did the right thing. The Professor should write the lor for the student period.

My son might want to do an internship /study abroad at Technion, which is in Israel, he joked about trying to find someone to write him a lor. Sad he actually had to think about it.

I have been to Israel twice. Once your there you will get it. The news media you see about Israel that is very slanted. For those making comments please just keep in mind it’s the Only democratic country in the entire Middle East. Do I agree with all their policies… No. Do I agree with all the US policies… No.

Maybe it’s just my neck of the woods, but I don’t actually know any Jewish people offended by being called a Jew. But that’s not the hill I’m going to die on so I’m happy to say Jewish people/Jewish-Americans instead.

The department did not sanction this and we do not have an official department policy on this. In fact, the department has purposely stayed mum.

It’s worth noting that several of the people- both grad students and faculty- in AMAS (Arab & Muslim American Studies), part of the American Culture department that John is in, have received threatening emails and telephone calls. It’s one of the reasons that the department has stayed quiet, hoping it would go away.

So their argument is human rights… Look who’s helping Syrian refugees. https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5117904,00.html

Looks who’s treating injured Palestinian’s https://www.standwithus.com/news/article.asp?id=1671

Israel will give treatment even to their so called enemies. I have seen it first hand.

Again, I don’t agree with all their policies but a professors first dedication is to their students not their beliefs. Let the students have the educational experience they want and make up their own minds.

@skieurope

I had no idea you are a non-native speaker or female. My response would be the same to anyone.

I don’t like being called a jew by a non-jew. Just sayin’

You can mansplain to a male. :wink:

We just call that having a discussion.

What am I a little too pushy for you?

Bingo.

@romanigypsyeyes I respect you very much and have agreed with probably 100% of your posts. But you are misguided on this. Speaking of conflation, don’t conflate the current elected government with the country.

I hate the current right-wing government there as much as I hate other extreme right-wing governments. But have you been? Tel Aviv is more liberal than San Francisco. “Right wing” applies to the current government’s policy toward peace and how it deals with security. And it’s wrong. Hopefully the DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED government will change. But the county’s domestic policies, regardless of who’s in office, are among the most liberal in the world. National health insurance. Generous government-supported parental leave. Strict but common-sense gun control laws (you are allowed to have a gun after meeting onerous licensing requirements, but you do not have the RIGHT to have a gun – a person can be denied).

Israel is the ONE place we can go when stuff hits the fan again. And it will.

Oh, and I agree with the disciplinary action against the prof. He was out of line. Anyone else notice that he said YES to the student, but changed his tune TWO DAYS after he received tenure?

MODERATOR’S NOTE: This thread has become too uncivil, so I am closing it.
