Should new students open bank account at school?

If an OOS student already has a checking account from her hometown, is it necessary to open a new checking account with a bank located in Chapel Hill?

Are there any major problem/inconvenience if the student does not have a local bank account in Chapel Hill?

Will the students have time during summer orientation program to go open a bank account if need be?

I don’t think it should be a problem. Just make sure you have some money on your OneCard before you go in case you need anything on campus (in the CTOPS thread, they recommend it).

I guess the only problem might be ATM fees, but it should be fairly simple enough to find one.

Personally, I’m closing out my account with BOA (ugh, horrible) and switching to Wachovia (/Wells Fargo) since it’s affiliated with UNC and I can link my OneCard and Wachovia account (plus, I spied a Wachovia ATM near the Pit, so it should be easy enough to get cash).

there is also a wachovia atm outside ramshead

It’s not too big of an issue. There are ATMs on Franklin Street and by Davis Library.

I actually did get a new account when I moved here, to link it to my OneCard and have a OneCard Plus. This was easy for me, since my school ID and debit card were the same thing. It may not be the best thing if your kid has a propensity to lose things. I know people that did not want the two to be the same thing so they had a less chance of losing both.
