seems similar to the JoePa argument

I am shocked to see posters seeing the behavior in the video as “protected free speech”

He acknowledges how “dead” the young woman was, meaning incapable of consent and acknowledges rape. He is aware of a crime, not clear if he actually witnessed it? seemed he had since he states, “you should have seen how they carried her”

How is that free speech???

Jonri I had the same thought. Wonder if the questioner asking “what if that was your daughter” etc. was trying to get this guy to admit his involvement.

He’s the prosecutor’s son?

the last two paragraphs in the article make reference to his being the prosecutor’s son.

I remember reading somewhere that one of the Manson Family murderers said something about anyone being capable of murder while high … which is probably akin the the “boys will be boys” and raping while drinking underage argument.

So incredibly pathetic and sad.

I don’t think so. My generation didn’t have access to:

The internet
Cell phones w/ video cameras
Facebook
Instagram
(possibly) date-rape drugs.

Had high school students in my era been able to broadcast their parties to the entire world, who knows what would have happened? I find it fascinating that the circle of students messaging each other seemed to have had no idea that documenting the happenings would have consequences. Those who sent messages online seemed to have no doubt that it was rape. They didn’t seem to have any impulse to help the victim, or to alert authorities. It’s bizarre.

As to the Ohio State student, he may have failed his courses.

What has our nation become that we are not outraged at the abuse of others? We treat each other horribly and have become desensitized by it. We have become a nation that is more concerned with what will become of “ME” than what is respectful treatment of others. We have become a nation of entitlements and we are only concerned when it affects “us”. Look at how we pass laws. We pit people against people rather than unifying us as a country. Who decided that a person who is poor or homeless is less valuable than a person of wealth? or that a person who works in a corporation is evil? Why should any group of Americans pay an higher percentage of taxes to be a citizen in this country? We use to be a nation that welcomed people into our land with open arms, now immigration laws are so difficult that it requires lawyers, money and years before you can get in. And those who don’t want to wait or don’t have the money to come into the country legally, cross over illegally and are both resented and used for all the low paying jobs “citizens” don’t want to do. This is just a sampling of “politically correct attitudes” in America and we wonder where people get the idea that it is ok to kill, rape and plunder their neighbor? I’m not an expert, but unless you are atheist, Christians, jews, muslims all believe in one God and their own books, Bible, Torah, & Quran, all speak to peace, loving our neighbors as ourselves and not killing or stealing. What would our nation look like if we started doing what we say we believe in and I include myself in that observation. Sorry for the long statement that just came flying out. It was not meant to offend anyone, although I’m pretty sure I equally offended every group :), just something to think about. It makes me sad to see what we have become as a nation.

I don’t know if anyone’s read the stuff on local leaks, but it goes further than the County Prosecuting Attorney Jane Hanlin (whose house was allegedly used for one of the parties where one of the rapes occurred. Her son (Charlie Keenan) is a member of the Big Red football team and well known member of the “Rape Crew”–which explains why Hanlin was so quick to put out a statement distancing herself.

The town sheriff is also being implicated in all this mess. If Anonymous is correct, the sheriff is allegedly overseeing several shady operations in the town and his department "inadventently deleted several videos from the phones of the players.

A couple of reports say the defendants claim the girl was drinking heavily and intoxicated - that there was sex, but she consented. ignoring the idea the she couldn’t consent if she wasn’t coherent - if she were in fact intoxicated instead of drugged, wouldn’t that place the parents of the kids that hosted these parties in a bind? I don’t know abour Ohio, but in many states, they would be liable for the underage kids drinking in their house. Either she was drugged, and they allowed that to happen in their home, or they allowed drinking in their home. I don’t buy for a minute the argument that they had no idea what was going in - it’s their responsibility to know what’s going on.

My question would be whether the prosecuting attorney had a vested interest in keeping this quiet - because it happened in her own home, even if she wasn’t aware of it at the time.

laserp, I’m not going to reply to you in detail for fear of being considered “political,” but suffice it to say that although I think we all share your disgust with this event–and the others that we hear about and have discussed before–I think you have confused and conflated many concepts and buzzwords, and overlooked a lot of history.

I certainly understand that reading about stuff like this is sickening and upsetting.

The idea that a person who is virtually or literally unconscious can consent to sex is patently ridiculous. Don’t they have a picture of those brutes carrying her by her wrists and ankles, as if she were a sack of cement? (The one that is pixillated?) I think that they are going to have a very hard time pleading that one, given their buddy’s taped rant, the photos, the peeing on her, and everything else. This is no he-said, she-said situation.

It continues to astonish me that these idiots tape themselves and take photos. I guess they never heard of Abu Graib or Savannah Dietrich.

Well…one more development; the attorney for the young man in the video has made a statement “explaining” it.

[Atty. for Man Says Steubenville Video “Disgusting” - WKBN - 27 First News - Local News - Youngstown, Warren, Columbiana, Ohio - Sharon, Pennsylvania](http://www.wkbn.com/content/news/local/story/Atty-for-Man-Says-Steubenville-Video-Disgusting/s6nlQKY-VEya2fi80_je6A.cspx)

What gets me the most is not the rape itself but that at least 5 other young men, who claim they were not participants, did absolutely nothing to help her. Even by this account, Nodianus saw the girl being carried out intoxicated and went into the party and heard that she was raped…and sat around laughing and joking about it.

And we know from his own statement that Cody Saltsman took a picture and tweeted about the “whore.” We know that the 3 young men who testified at the probable cause hearing did nothing.

We also know that at least 4 other kids were in the room when Nodianus did his rant. Maybe there was some overlap, but NONE of them called the cops either.

It’s just so heart breaking that NONE of them did anything to help her.

It is heart breaking and horrifying that no one did anything to help her. Even if they were afraid to intervene directly, a phone call to the police would have been so easy. A text to a parent - “help, something bad is happening and I don’t know what to do”. Something. Anything.

I honestly can’t imagine my son (or husband or brother) witnessing something like this and not doing something.

I just checked steubenvillefacts.org. It is now linking to a Fox News article about the launch of the website.

How tone deaf can you be?!!!

So, Nodianos claims that he wasn’t there because he conveniently went to McDonalds while the assault was occurring, then returned just in time to see a young girl carried out of the house like a sack of potatoes, a young girl whom he believed to have been raped (perhaps because he saw pictures-- he was awfully specific in the video about a *** in a ***). And then he made a sleazy giggling video about her.

Where in this “explanation” is the explanation of why he didn’t call the police?

PS Drunkenness is not an explanation. If he normally knows right from wrong (which is in doubt), he chose to drink enough so that he forgot his morals (if any).

I don’t know how much of what Anonymous claims is true, but…

In its version of events and in some comments made in response to local news stories, it would appear that at least one or more young women were also present…and did nothing. I sure hope that’s wrong, but if it’s true…I am even more nauseated.

So Nodiamos made the video about how hilariously funny the girl looked while being raped before she was raped? So either he’s lying, or he knew she was going to be raped and did nothing. Or, I suppose, she was raped multiple times, as some have alleged.

Update 1:24 p.m. Ohio State has now confirmed on its Facebook page that Michael Nodianos, the boy depicted in the 12-minute video making fun of the alleged gang rape victim, is no longer a student there.

[The Steubenville Rape Case’s Party Host Has His Sports Scholarship Under Review - National - The Atlantic Wire](http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2013/01/steubenville-rape-case-party-host/60656/)

Interesting. Also that the prosecutor’s son’s scholarship is now in question. Thanks for the link.

Nodianos, who was drunk when he made the video, is “ashamed” of his behavior that night, “after some sober reflection,” his attorney said.

“He sincerely regrets the behavior. He was not raised to act in this manner… it really is just poor judgment.”

McNamara said Nodianos still has an athletic scholarship at OSU but isn’t sure what his future plans at the university are.

I find it hard to believe he would only hold these misogynistic views while under the influence. reminds me of Mel Gibson’s alibi.

apparently he dropped out, and may still be able to return. when I watched the video of his repulsive rant it appeared he was acting “cool” showing off with his joking about the young woman being raped. maybe he hoped it would go viral. well, it appears social media has come back to haunt him.
