should political standing be a decision factor?

Two points.
Some of my best friends are southern liberals who in Chicago or New York are immediately placed on the defensive to prove they are not racist or homophobic.
Another is that there are political liberals and social liberals. Some of the schools mentioned have a hefty drug culture, and some were as dismissive of Bill and Hillary as of the Bush family. Just be prepared.

my best friend is a mormon.

I bet you'd get a free exchange of ideas at St. Johns.

Agnes Scott is also very liberal

McDaniel is quite liberal. Son goes there.

hmmm.... I've visited Centre. It's a terrific school; I'd put it closer to moderate (then again, I'd put pres. Bush closer to 'liberal.' read into this what you will). Personally, I think its good to avoid the political extremes when it comes to picking a college; there's a lot to be said for living with people who think differently than you.

I would place Hendrix in the "liberal" category. (But not "very liberal" such as Reed, New College, etc.)
I think Lawrence would fall more in the "conservative" category. Rhodes is pegged correctly as conservative.

I'd put Knox in liberal and Centre in Moderate.

I agree with Hope as conservative and Kalamazoo as liberal.

Ditto on MattEisn's comment.
Agnes Scott is very liberal.

I think you might as well take antioch off the list at this point.

From my experience with Lawrentians, they are more or less tolerant towards other points of view. For a small school it seems to have a good cross section of attitudes and it may be that that is part of the selection process. (shoulder shrug)

Dear (whatismouse) Disciple:

Liberal colleges are pretty universal. Very few are conservative. If you are an active political type who wishes to argue on political issues or are messianic or are a devout worshipper and fanatic for all causes, then you need to find an insititution that will satisfy your personal needs.

Some schools, though liberal, are not political. Others pursue specific causes. So choose carefully and visit.
