My son is applying to A&M and will be a review admit. Is there any point in his choosing Mays or engineering as a major choice, or will he have a better chance of getting full admission if he makes two other choices, as Mays and engineering will almost certainly be full by the time he would be admitted, anyway? We attended an application workshop where it was stated that A&M doesn’t look at major choice in making admissions decisions, but still wonder if it wouldn’t be safer to make two other choices.
Your son will have no better chance for full admission if he puts other majors. The tricky thing with Mays is that the toral number of spots allocated for incoming freshmen usually fill before the application deadline. Applicants for Mays are given spots as they are accepted into A&M (rolling admissions). For Look COE, EVERY applicant goes under holistic review. There are some auto/academic admits who do not get in and some review applicants who do. Engineering is looking for an applicants Calculus and physics readiness. If your son is a competitive applicant and strong in math and physics, this might be an OK avenue for him to go.
If he is offered full admissions and Mays if full, they will go to his second choice major or asked to pick another major.
For engineering, 1st and 2nd choice majors on the application must both be listed as engineering.
If he is offered Blinn Team, which allows him all the same benefits of being full admit. Mays has a pathway agreement with Blinn for auto acceptance into Mays after completing the requirements. This is for fall 2017. http://blinnteam.tamu.edu/AdmissionAgreements/Buad%20worksheet%20(TEAM)%20-%20FA17.pdf
Here is the link to all of the pathway agreements between Blinn and TAMU, if he does not get full admissions.

Good Luck
