Should son take PSAT as a sophomore?

Opie: Neckties don't show marks.

Seriously, I'm lucky if I know who goes where at this point and where I'm supposed to be when.

"Opie: Neckties don't show marks."

Yes, but they were very effective bibs for the French. That is their origin. Hence the reason they "catch" what ever your eating.

Honestly haven't worn a tie in a while or my suits. I look like homeland security with my size in a suit and I don't want to scare anybody.

Just getting older, and older

Well, there's a job possibility for retirement!

Then again, I cannot help but wonder ... does Maybery really need homeland security???

Is your kid a strong test taker? If so, then the sophomore PSAT is excellent practice and lets one identify weak components. It also gets them familiarized with the test site. Ours is in a freezing gym at 7 in the morning. The poor kids who came in from a nice October day in shorts absolutely froze.

I wouldn't impose the PSAT on a sophomore who hated the idea. Our guy was ok with it, scored well and went on to score even better in subsequent tests. For him it was a terrific warm up -- but I've proctored the exam and I've seen that it is torture for some kids.

"does Maybery really need homeland security???"

Ya never know what someone might do down in the ole fishin hole....

Goober could be skinny dipping.

I reckon Andy would take care of that just fine.

I bet Opie never took the PSATs when he was a sophomore ... or a junior...

Seriously, I agree with Olymom.

To Olymom,
I have just started this investigation on my own, but after reading all these posts I think my son should take it in October. I wouldn't make him take it if he didn't want to... I spoke to him about it yesterday and he wants to take it. (He liked the part about...you don't have to study for this one.) He actually is a good test taker and I think it will actually motivate him for the "real" thing.

Our kids school gives the PSAT in 9, 10, and 11. It was good practice and yes, started the mass mailings coming early. It must be regional- I dont see anyhting coming from Indiana, but ds has been getting a gazillion things for years from Hampton-Sydney and Birmingham Southern Univ. I wish they'd save their paper.

My D school in Georgia gave it also in 9, 10, and 11, the practice is valuable, not only to see how the test works, but to know how to pace themselves. Timing is valuable on these types of tests!

Him wanting to is a huge green light IMHO. We picked up a PSAT prep book at the local bookstore and left it lying around. I was pleased when our guy started working through it. He did end up as a National Merit Scholar too! (no money though -- that's not always a sure deal, no matter what you hear).
Good luck!
