Should This Music Major Take A Business Minor?

Hello,

On May 6th, 2008, I was admitted to USC Thornton's Music Industry (B.S.) program. I am a transfer student who just completed my second year of college. My goals are simply to write, play, record and produce my own songs and do albums, but, of course, to be very successful at such (easier said than done, I know). However, with the way the music industry is shaping up these days, it's become very much about being an entrepreneur and handling not just artistic aspects, but also business. While my major does require some business courses, I was wondering that, because of such trends, whether it would be prudent to also take a business minor at Marshall? Would this even be worth my time, or should I consider something like an MBA eventually? Or would this be a colossal waste of time, considering what I want to do? I'm just trying to think of this stuff now, so that, once I graduate, I won't find myself hindered or disadvantaged.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Anyone with any insight to this? Thanks!

Hey Matthew. Getting into the music industry and being successfull in it is no easy task. Can it be done? Absolutely. I recently spoke with an attorney that worked in the music industry; he did management for bands/singers such as the rolling stones, madonna, m.j., mariah carey, and the list continues. He has represented and worked in many studios. He has been very successfull in working in this industry in LA for over forty years. I am wanting to get into the ent industry as well, but on a different side than you. From what I have taken in and learned from others such as that attorney is that education only takes you so far, especially in the field you are getting into. It is networking, your skills and the connections you have. Having a minor in business would definately be sufficient for you IMO. I just dont see that a mba would be something that would help you maraculously in your position. As you work in the industry, you learn the business and understand it. A minor would be more than enough. This is just my personaly opinion based on my experiences and what I know. Congratulations to you!
