D is getting ready to hit the submit button on the UF app but has been questioning her decision to talk about her choice of majors in her essay. She visited both departments ( physics and engineering) this summer and interviewed with undergraduate advisers and attended the "afternoon with honors" tour and info session lunch. She clearly has demonstrated interest but still is unsure of her major. Would it sound flaky to mention this? She has goals she has discussed but doesn't know which path she is going to take just yet but she will be going onto graduate school regardless of her major. Will list her stats if you feel that is important. She is s pretty accomplished kid for our area.

No need for stats! As long as her essay shows passion, insight (into who she is) and is well written, it’s fine. :)

Nothing wrong with being unsure about your major. UF is very supportive of letting Freshman work it out in that first year or two…hence why a student is admitted to the University and not to a college (and it’s fairly easy to change majors in that first year or two).

Good Luck!!

Thanks! I will share that with her.She is a little nervous because she knows kids fro her school last year who did not get in but did get into schools like Cornell and Georgia Tech. Very strange!

I hear those stories all of the time. That’s why she should apply to a few other schools, just to be safe if nothing else.

Last year my DD also applied to UNF, UCF, University of Alabama, Auburn, etc. Since those schools are on rolling admissions, you’ll get accepted (and be notified of any merit scholarships) before the end of November. It helps with the stress while waiting till February.

Good Luck!
