If they say no more than 1 page, for example, do they mean single spaced? Columbia says the essay should be 250-500 words (or 1-2 pages). 2 pages single spaced can be 1000+ words. Do you think they mean double spaced or it doesn't matter?

I would just go by the word count and keep it around 500. Definitely don’t do 2 pages single spaced.

D did single-spaced paragraphs with double-spaces between paragraphs. Looked very neat and easy to read.

Except the weird thing is that two double spaced pages is about 700 words, so even if the document were 2 double spaced pages, it would be more than 500 words. It seems like Columbia doesn’t really care then?

oh definitely stick more by the word limit. One’s interpretation of a page really can vary, as you’ve just pointed out, and they aren’t gonna be any less ****ed to see a 1000 word essay just because it said (1-2 pages) on their essay question.

I would stick to size 12 times new roman font with single or 1.5 spaced if the word limit is not specified.
