Should volunteer work always relate to your career choice?

I currently volunteer at my library by reading with children. However, my career is more medical-field related. Would I be better off at a hospital vilunteering? The hospital in my town doesn’t let people do any actual stuff inside until you’re 16.

Volunteer work should help people.

Ideally, it should help the people most in need of help, as opposed to helping the volunteer further his career aspirations.

But often it can serve both. We don’t know what youre aiming for, but I agree the sort of work where you help the needy is a good experience.

I think it is good to volunteer in a medical environment to 1) help the community and 2) see if you like working in a medical environment.

You may hate dealing with the general public. You may hate blood. You may love helping people. But you won’t know until you try it.

I would say especially try to volunteer if your major is nursing or something directly medical related. But if you are “pre-med” then you can wait until you are in college.
