Should we file jointly or separately?

My husband and I both go to college, last year we filed jointly (I didn't make any money last year so his income alone went in), but his income was too much for us to get any significant grants. Our EFC was 3900 and we got picked for verification, so I had take out a lot of loans to pay for tuition and living expenses (13,000K).

This year I'm working and he got a higher paying job, so now our EFC will be much higher and we probably won't get any help. I make significantly less than he does.

If we file separately, will I still have to declare his income in my FAFSA application? I'm gonna make about $10,000 this year not counting loans and my tiny grant.

What's the best course of action for us to get more financial aid?

You have to report his income regardless of your tax filing status. That is the law. And expect to be picked for verification again.

Thanks Iron Maiden!
I’ll be ready with those transcripts even before they ask for them.
