Should we have said yes for financial aid question?

There’s no “might” about it; UVA explicitly says that they are need blind in the admissions process. But I understand what you are saying.

I was very surprised to learn recently that Colgate University is need aware. As with Reed, that’s certainly out of character with the other schools that CC considers “Top Liberal Arts Colleges.”

There are a lot of changes in need aware status over time. I am surprised to see some schools quietly join the list. Wesleyan announced it, but that is not typical. Shame on George Washington that they had to be outed as such. If there is doubt, one should call the admission office, get a hold of an admissions officer, not a student assistant, and outright ask. If there are qualifications, like “mostly”, or for 95%, then the answer is that they are not need blind.

Also for the purposes of this discussion, and most, for that matter, need awareness in admissions is a subject that generally comes up for freshman US student admissions during the regular admissions cycle. Many schools that are need blind in that situation are not need blind for international students, wait listed students, transfer students and students in divisions of a college that are not mainstream, such as evening colleges. For example, Columbia is need blind for Engineering School and the main college, but not for the College of General Studies.
