My daughter’s school made the reporting of class rank optional. And when they do report they only report in Decile. My daughter just missed the 1st Decile (she is in the top 11%). The HS will report this as 2nd Decile.
Given that the reporting is optional, would it hurt her chances of getting into college if we opted NOT to report her rank? Do we have to report it?
If she is applying to selective schools it does matter. Many colleges list what percentage of their students are in the top 10% of their class. However, in most stats it also indicates that a majority of students/schools did not report rank. In the common app, there is a red asterisk next to class size and rank, indicating it is a required field. Since the rank is optional at her school. Would it be ethical to not report her rank in her transcript, and select NONE for ranking on the common app?
Many schools do not rank. The fact that your school makes it optional suggests they know it can be gamed. I would probably not report as her grades can probably speak for themselves.
