See I don't really like to sing, but I haven't considered it, but should I tryout for Show Choir cuz it looks good on apps and i want to meet new people and do something. How competitive is it at your schools? Do you think a newbie would get in even though I didn't do it this year? Thanks!!!

Uhhhh I wouldn’t try out just because it looks good for apps. But if you’re genuinely interested, then you should go for it. You may end up loving it, which will be of more benefit in the long run than having another EC for your applications.

Most schools have different levels of choir, including a beginning for those who haven’t sung in a choir before… if your school offers that option, may as well try it and see what you think.

Don’t do it for your apps. That’s a really stupid idea.

I don’t like to sing (professionally) and I did it freshman year to get my Fine Arts requirement out of the way. It was so not fun. Our school has one of the top high schools choirs in the country, and the director of that taught our freshman class so he expected perfection :P

But I came out of it with a newfound respect for singers. They put in so much work/time and it takes a lot of effort. Go for it if you like singing, but I’ll warn you. It is not worth if you’re doing it for your app. Nothing is.

In 2007 and 2008 my highschool’s showchoir was rated #1 in the country. I’m in it. It’s nothing like Glee. We practice for 9 hours a week and have 2 camps a year where we have four 12 hour days.

I enjoy it, but if you don’t LOVE it, you won’t last.

^Adding on to that: at my school they practiced during lunch, before school, and after school three days a week.

And when practicing/rehearsing for the two annual shows, yearly musical, and the yearly world tour, these people don’t expect to leave school.

It’s a big commitment. You can always try it and maybe you’ll fall in love with it.

^It really is fun :)

But a LOT of practice.

^Yup. The people who do it clearly love it and they’re like a family. It’s definitely worth the sweat/tears/blood.

But it’s just not my thing :/

I agree with fairy_dreams: Only do it if you are interested in it. In my school, everyone in show choir MUST take private voice lessons every week. It takes a lot of commitment. Only do it if your heart is in it.

Don’t do it just for apps. When you join something like that you join a TEAM, and every member depends on everyone else in the choir to keep afloat. If you end up not liking it you’ll be miserable, but you’ll also be dragging everyone else in the choir down with you. Show choir is something that takes up so much time and energy that you should NEVER just do it on a whim.

That being said, choir has been the best part of my life for the better part of six years. If you are willing to make the commitment and put in the time you will gain some of the greatest friends you could ask for, and you’ll find the skills you learn from musical reasoning helping you in other areas of your study. But please please please don’t just do it because it looks good.
