Show them your talent?

If a school doesn't necessarily ask for it, can you still send things that prove your talent or is this asking too much?
Examples: Recordings of Musical Performances, Art Portfolios, Writing Portfolios

If the portfolio is not required and/or you’re not looking to go into that field, I’d email an admissions officer and ask.

Are you convinced that you are very, very good? The general recommendation is that unless you’ve won national awards for something, you probably shouldn’t send in supplementary materials.

You do NOT have to be a prodigy to send in materials, but there has to be some special aspect of it. My friend was totally into Science, a huge science nerd, but he also composed his own piano music. Schools like Williams address Art Supplements on their website. If the school you’re looking at doesn’t, email to make sure.

According to a Darmouth admissions officer I know, a passion sufficiently demonstrated in Art Supplements can earn the applicant 2 extra “points,” whereas something totally prodigous would receive l5 “points.”

If adults you know, other than your parents, have encouraged you to send things in, do it.

Good advice from Ealgian. Praise, accolades, objective assessments from professionals in the field are your best unbiased judges of talent. Also realize each institution reviews supplements from their own perspectives, and based on their internal needs. In general, an exceptional or good supplement might help, a mediocre one will not hurt. Do NOT send a supp if the school says that none will be welcomed or accepted. Do consider the comparable level of talent at various schools when submitting. Schools with strong programs in visual or performing arts will have a higher standard in assessing supps.

Here’s a fairly current thread regarding music supplements

I was admitted to HPMS and had a blast sending MIT, Caltech and Princeton everything I
wanted to!

Tried to be more sober with H though and did not send anything extra to S
unless it was exactly what they asked for.

One of the supplemental items I sent in was good. The others were
definitely not at that level…but I had a blast. he, he.

^^What supplemental recs did u send to MIT?
I am a self-trained guitarist … a pretty good at that(forgive my lack of humility …). I have never taken any classes whatsoever. Do I send in a self-composed guitar work?? If not anything, good music never hurts does it??

^ No, but bad music would

Ya definitely!
