<p>I have begun writing my main CommonApp essay and asking my friends to proofread it for me. One of them says that it sounds negative when I describe myself as a child. I don't fully understand this issue myself.</p>

<p>I thought that a lot of people tend to write about personal events in their essays that may seem "negative".</p>

<p>Is this common? I thought that it's good to show how a personality has transformed, etc etc.</p>

<p>As long as you’re not casting yourself in a bad light, it’s usually not a bad idea to write about ways that you’ve changed as a person. Colleges will want to see that you’ve grown as a person.</p>
