Showing Interest in Application!

Hi! I'm new and trying to figure out all of the little details of the application process. But one part of it, really confuses me. I'm planning on applying to SUNY Bing, and although my grades are not that good (81.9 Average after Junior Year), I really do want to attend Binghamton. One of my senior friends told me that it's good to show interest to your admissions officer during the process, but I'm just wondering how do I go about this? As funny as it may sound, I honestly think it's e-mailing them and having conversations while saying things like, "...so I really love Bing!". I don't think that's the right way to go about it, but I was wondering if anyone does? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Showing interest usually comes from visiting campus, having an on/off campus interview (if offered), attending a visit from an adcom at your high school, etc., not necessarily e-mails expressing your personal interest. (That should be revealed in your application.) Ask if SUNY Bing tracks expressed interest and if there are visiting options, etc. that would be viable for you (generally state schools don’t track interest like this). Either way, the best option is to make your interest in the school evident in your application, essays and so on. If there’s no essay required/the topic doesn’t allow for it, see if you can add a blurb in an additional information section. Good luck!

To my knowledge, no public school factors uses showing interest as an admissions factor. Public universities make their admissions decisions overwhelmingly by their applicants’ academic stats and state of residence, with in-state residents receiving preference.
