My son is very, very interested in Kenyon. He's done the research, read the guidebooks, examined the website, requested information and received the beautiful viewbook. We can't travel to Ohio before applying though, it just isn't possible. How can he show interest? How can he let them know that it's his first choice school. (We need to see the finances before we can commit, so ED is out.)

Kenyon is sending a rep to a town about 3 hours from us, and he's willing and eager to make the 6 hour round trip to meet him/her, but it's at a college fair so it will be the usual zoo. How can he indicate to them just how dedicated he is to going there? How can he help them remember him. Any advice would be tremendously appreciated!

I would have him contact the admissions counselor for his area a few times with questions etc. Kenyon keeps track of every contact you make, so any little bit helps. For the college fair, you should alert the rep(s) attending that he will be coming, so they will expect him. Something that would be more helpful than the fair would be to set up a meeting/interview with an alum near your town through the admissions office if possible. Also, as an alum, I am able to refer students to the college, perhaps that will help? http://www.kenyon.edu/x28445.xml

I would also be willing to send personal email to the appropriate admissions officers, as I am just out of Kenyon in '06, if I agree that your son would be a good match for Kenyon. Kenyon has excellent financial aid, so hopefully it will be affordable when that time comes (lots of grant and scholarship $).

I have sent you a private message with my email address if you would like me to review your son's profile/answer questions etc. I would also be willing to talk with him directly at some point if he would like.

Thank you MolBioAce for your suggestions and your offer to help. I'll share it with him and see if he's up for me sharing his info. You are very kind to offer your advice and help.

I don't know your son's stats, but just for another perspective: my D last year had an exhaustive and long list of schools in the Northeast. She wouldn't look in any other geographic area. Her advisor visited Kenyon and basically made her apply, sight unseen. She got in, visited after she was accepted and is a very happy freshman. Her stats were very good for Kenyon, but her admission letter pointed out it was her writing that impressed them. Her advisor had also heard back from the admission officer the same thing. She did a superb job on her essays and she also threw in a small sample of creative writing.
For all I know, your S could be a math or science whiz and this isn't applicable. But if this does pertain to you, feel free to PM me, too. Kenyon is a very special place. Good luck!

Thanks, HSN. His stats look to me to be a little on the hgh side of Kenyon's averages. He's a social science guy. I think his essays are shaping up very nicely, but then I'm not an admissions officer comparing them to thousands of others. ;)
