Shows like All Creatures Great and Small

Dh and I have been loving this series. It’s given us something to look forward to on Sunday nights (previously a dreaded evening because…Monday) Looking for a replacement. Can be anything on at any time but we will watch on Sunday night. We have Netflix, Prime, and cable. We like a wide variety of shows but for this specific purpose we want something like All Creatures: good acting, “gentle” (ie no gratuitous sex/violence/language) lovely scenery, good storytelling. I’d put Downton into the same category but dh wasn’t a fan. Any suggestions?? Doesn’t have to necessarily be a period series, just something that makes you feel good.

We really liked The Right Stuff on Disney. If you are into history of space exploration like we are, you will likely enjoy the series.

Perhaps you would like The Indian Doctor on Prime.

Omg thank you!! I loved his books! I think there was a movie based on one years ago that I watched but had not heard about the series.

ETA and Tristan is in it!

The Danish series, Seaside Hotel. A fun romp with an ensemble cast who spend each summer together at the hotel in the period leading up to /start of WWII. Subtitled, but they don’t seem to get in the way of the drama or laughs.

hmmm…what is good acting, story telling, can be fairly subjective, but these held my interest…

Agree with the Durrells. Be sure to also watch What the Durrells Did Next.
Seaside Hotel (it’s in Danish).
Heartland (beautiful scenery)
Grantchester.
Last Tango in Halifax.
Call the Midwife.
Land Girls.
English Game.
Atlantic Crossing.
The Restaurant (Swedish)

Shitt’s Creek

All pretty tame (ie no gratuitous sex/violence/language)

(Clearly, I need to get off the couch…)

Detectorists. First episode for some reason has more swearing than the 3 seasons in total—maybe they were going for a vibe that they decided was not needed. LIght comedy.

Very relaxing, calming look at members a of metal detecting club in England, just a bunch of regular joes. Backing guitar music by Johnny Flynn (who also sings the theme) adds to the relaxing tone.

Written by and starring MacKenzie Crook. Toby Jones co-stars, along with Rachel Stirling and Diana Rigg (Rachel’s mom).

Available on Amazon Prime, I believe.

Father Brown is a favorite of ours. Death in Paradise is also good with great Caribbean scenery. Around the World in 80 days was good too.

Haven’t watched the Father Brown spinoff, Sister Boniface Mysteries. Will check it out at some point.

i liked Endeavor. it’s a detective series - set in the 70s in england . i liked how it wasnt too graphic, but very thoughtful and detailed for each show. i rarely could figure out “who dunnit” but the clues are all there.

Have you tried reruns of Maine Cabin Masters, or Life Below Zero, or Ice Pilots?
Beautiful scenery, unusual occupations, interesting personalities.

Second Anne with an E, Heartland, Doc Martin, Last Tango in Halifax.

Maine Cabin Masters is the best! New England and order out of chaos. What could be better? Endless reruns were my pandemic go-to.

Sometimes we know right where the locations if those cabins are, too. Great show. But the budgets seem ridiculously low so I guess the owners get a lot for free.
