Shuttle from Des Moines

D would like to visit in April but cannot arrange to be there on an Admitted Student Day. She would be flying by herself to Des Moines on a weekday and cannot rent a car. Is there a shuttle or other service that she can hire from the the airport to Grinnell?

There is a regular shuttle service for vacations and such that you can find out about at the web site. I think it is handled by a local contractee- but the kids make bookings through the school. I would assume they would make provisions for the admitted students day as well. My son uses the shuttle all the time. Once, when his luggage was lost, they even shuttled him back and forth an extra time at no cost....

Thanks. Problem is that D is not able to visit on a regular Admitted Student Day. I was hoping that there was some sort of service that anyone could hire at the airport. We'll contact the college today and inquire.

The Admission Office will provide transportation for any prospective students who are flying to Des Moines on their own (sans parent). You'll need to give them 10 days notice, but the service is free.

Yes to what abe1957 wrote. My D flew to Des Moines by herself and they sent a car to pick her up (and returned her two days later). It is such a small airport, finding each other was VERY easy. We gave them less than 10 days notice and they still worked it out for us.

Thanks. We called and its been arranged.

There's always the really nice old guys who volunteer to take the people to Grinnell for the airport. I've met about four of them and I love them all!

brickbreeze -- who are these old guys and how do you get in touch with them? We've had a couple of occassions when my daughter has needed a ride to the airport - and the service provided by the school was really expensive.

Hm...well I was in a program who paid for the flights and stuff...so perhaps it was only for that, but I think they're just volunteer to help the school or something. They just show up at the airport with a little Grinnell sign and drive us there.

They are not volunteers. They are employed by the college as drivers. They use college-owned vehicles. Any department, faculty member, or student who uses their services must pay their hourly rate and mileage for the use of the college vehicle. Snorky, these are the services that your daughter has likely looked into (if she's been needing a ride to the airport at a time other than break) and found to be relatively expensive. When prospective students come to campus, the admission office foots the bill for the service - but it is the same bill that your daughter would have been told.

I recently had a problem. My D was coming back (exhausted!) from spending spring break studying in Paris. The school promised me a 10 PM shuttle that never showed. She had to take a cab...and that after waiting two hours for the phantom shuttle. She was mad at me and at Grinnell.

you should contact the school about it...
