Any suggestions about cheap transit to/from the Hartford airport? I prefer the cheapest options, but any ideas are appreciated! Thanks!

The Valley Transporter. Cheap, depends on what you call cheap. Reliable, always.

^Not so cheap, but very reliable. Also, kind…I’ll never forget the first time D took the flight/ride back and put off calling home…I checked with Valley Transporter and they assured me that they had dropped her off at Smith and that she was probably in the hallway catching up with friends (very true)!

There are a couple of other shuttle companies too: First Class Shuttle and Seemo Shuttle, I’ve hard good experiences with both. Seemo used to be not so reliable but I think they’ve really improved and when I took them they worked out well.

When you’re going from campus to the airport for breaks, the SGA offers a shuttle bus that’s just $15, but it doesn’t operate at the beginning of the term and it doesn’t do pick ups from the airport at all, only drop offs at the start of Thanksgiving & spring break and at the end of exams. Also, once you get to campus, you can figure out how to arrange rides from fellow Smithies with cars. Some of them run actual car services to the airport, others will do it for a small fee or some candy.

But to get to campus the first time from the airport, pony up for the shuttle fare.

Thanks for the help! :)

Valley Transporter is absolutely fabulous – D has used them all year without a problem. D even moved to Smith sans parents last fall and they were very helpful with her luggage. They took her right to the door of her house. We shipped the rest of her stuff via FedEx Ground or UPS, the cheapest and most reliable methods we found. Last year UPS delivered directly to the houses the week of orientation, while FedEx did not. We found US Mail to be reliable only in sending priority flat-rate boxes to Smith. We would NOT recommend using the US Mail to ship large boxes to Smith, as our experience last year resulted in significant delays.

Just a tip for later on – probably not when you’re first arriving, but after you get to know some people around breaks/holidays you can try to get a cab if there’s no Smith Van.

If a couple of my friends and I have a flight on the same day and around the same time, give or take a few hours we usually end up calling GottaGoTaxi, I think the fare from Smith to Bradley is around $60-$70 total plus tip. Split between 3 people that’s around $20ish per person, which is 1/2 of the cost of a shuttle. Also, since it’s a cab service it’s more flexible towards your schedule (you tell them when to pick you up, unlike a shuttle with picks you up on their schedule).

Something to keep in mind for the future :)
