Sibling Intelligence

hmm, the younger vs. older sibling being smarter is very arguable.

for instance, the older sibling has to go to school w/o knowing much about college admissions process, how much work to do, which classes to take, etc.the younger sibling has the advantage of "learning from the mistakes" of the older sibling. also, the older sibling is expected to do well b/c well, he/she is older and he/she don't want his/her younger sibling beating him/her. this is the case in my family. this helps them work harder but they might crack under pressure. umm, just a few explanations for the younger/older thing from my own experiences.

coming from an asian famiily, i often face the prejudice that a male is smarter than a female. my mom always said that to me and i want to prove her wrong which is partly why i work hard. i think it's a bit unfair though... i mean, okay i know i can't work as much as a guy b/c well, i have to have kids somewhere along my career. but intelligence wise? i think a girl can be just as smart. b/c of this, they often expect more from sons than daughters.

I honestly don't know. My siblings and I have similar levels of intelligence, we just use it differently.

Jonathan_K, my twin sis is 7 minutes older than me also. =D I also have a brother 15 months older than both of us.

1. Which sibling tends to be the smartest?
In what sense?
I'm usually more clever, witty, and scientific minded. My siblings are probably more "socially intelligent" (although I'm far from being socialy retarted), and my brother is a far better (and more willing) writer and reader than I'll ever be.

2. Is there a large gap between the smartest and dumbest sibling?
GPA wise, probably. I don't know what mine was (couldn't bother to lose 10 minutes of lunch for it), but I'm assuming it to be fairly higher.

3. Is a person generally as intelligent as his or her siblings?
There are probably a whole lot of genes that code for what we call "intelligence", so it's fairly unlikely for siblings to be of the same level.

4. How does this factor in SAT scores and GPA?
No clue, considering that both are poor indicators of intelligence.

5. How does this factor in in terms of getting into colleges? Which sibling gets into the best schools?
Pfft, High School is all about effort. Anybody can get a good GPA adn strong ECs, just like anyone can slack off.

"although I'm far from being socialy retarted"

lol

Well, just to make it clear, I didn't mean socially retarted as in a I don't have any friends and spent my entire day in the web. I meant it as in I'm usually the person who does the drinking games and gets home throwing up on the floor... which I guess is sorta retarted, so I'm really contradicting myself =p

Sister = 30
Brother = 28
Me = 18

my sister went to pomona, my brother to princeton, and i am going to grinnell next year.

we all did well in highschool (i never got one B, so a 4.0 uw, they didnt have4.0s but both siblings were in IB, so it prob. equals out). i think their SAT scores were slightly better than mine. my sister is more "creative," my brother is goal oriented, and i am a perfectionist, so we all are "smart in our own ways i guess. we are all, without a doubt, book smart and have common sense. i wanted to do well in school because i wanted to follow in their footsteps i guess, but that doesnt change the fact that i was able to do so (i kind of think we all inherited "intelligent" genes...maybe)

i think that for me, having an older brother pushed me into learning quickly- i learned to read at 2 1/2 because he was learning to read at that time in kindergarten, and i wanted to keep up.

My sister, who is 15 months younger than I, is pretty much the same as me. She got all of the easy teachers in HS so it seems like she's smarter, but I did better on the SAT ones and twos so that evened the playing field.

Which sibling tends to be the smartest? I'm the smartest and I'm the middle child.

Is there a large gap between the smartest and dumbest sibling? From what I see now, there is in my family. My SAT math score was higher than my older sister's combined score, and I think my younger sister will follow in the footsteps of my older.

Is a person generally as intelligent as his or her siblings? Not in my case. At all.

How does this factor in SAT scores and GPA? As a middle child, I got the best SAT scores and highest GPA by far.

How does this factor in in terms of getting into colleges? Which sibling gets into the best schools? I'm going to Southern California, and my sister went to a community college.

I think the main difference between myself and my two sisters is I am motivated and they aren't. I enjoy learning, while they prefer to party or hang out with friends.

I did read somewhere that the oldest tend to be the biggest achievers and the middle child tends to be the most social (opposite in my family). This is because the older one wants the attention they had when they were the only one around, so they try and perform well so that their parents won't forget about them. The middle child has to deal with both younger and older people around them, so they end up talking a lot more.

Maybe not....You dont seem to get it. You spelled 'retarded' wrong. :P

ahhh i'm so disappointed in myself now. i followed suit and spelled it wrong too...and i spelled socially wrong!!! WTH? It was late..

OMG twins?

Are you and your sister identical Jonathan K.?

bahahahaha

not only that, but they are cojoined

you guys are lucky to have older siblings to help you. My only brother is 6 and 9 1/2 year younger than me which makes him more of a liability to me more than anything else.

I'm 16, my brother is 18 in his 2nd year of Pre-Med School. He's smarter than me....for now

In terms of what? Not much really, he just grasps concepts easier than I do.

No

He got a 1270 on the Old SAT, and a 3.7 GPA (he only took 2 AP's in all of high school). I haven't taken the SAT yet but so far my highest score is a 1680 lol. My GPA can't really be calculated since I've only completed 2 years of high school and only Soph and Junior really count.

He applied to UCI, UCR, UoP (University of Pacific), and Cal Poly Pomona. He got into all. But went a med school in Grenada called St. Georges. I dunno, at the end of my high school career, I could probably get into all of those except UoP. He got into UoP but not for the plan he wanted.

I'm pretty smart, but for some reason my 13 year old sister is kinda dumb. My parents are of average intelligence, so maybe I just got really lucky with genes and I was really supposed to turn out like my sister. My SAT score was 2230, and I'd extrapolate my sisters to be 1550 (new) or so. She gets Bs and mostly Cs in middle school while I got straight A's back then...

Ha, pretty much every single person on this thread is convinced that they are the smartest. =)

well, pretty much every single person on this thread really cares about school and has high scores/GPA whereas their siblings aren't as smart or don't care as much as school. and if they don't, why would they be on CC?

hm... i'm the oldest and have three younger brothers. my father is relatively smart (well.. smart enough to be a successful lawyer) and my mom is not interested in anything academic at all, didnt go to college etc.

i'm 16 and more like my father, do decently well on standardized testing etc but procrastinate A LOT and don't study enough.
my 14 yr old brother is not smart and is more like my mom: could care less about school (got mostly Cs in 8th grade, some Ds), probably won't go to college.
my 13 yr old brother is pretty smart but more athletic than smart, works hard and managed As in 6th grade.
my 9 yr old brother it's kind of early to really tell but he's definitely really athletic and naturally pretty smart but doesn't care about school

so basically i do the best on standardized tests, but don't work as hard as i should. my 13 yr old brother might do better than me overall because he's a harder worker.

^ill use that method. i have 3 little sisters and 1 big brother:

-My 17yr old bother is pretty smart, but he's just lazy-never studies and waits until the last minute to do everything. He still did okay on the SAT's and has a pretty high GPA
-i'm 16 and- havent taken the SAT's. im lazy about things, but not as bad as my brother. I'm doing better than he did in the classes he took, but our GPAs are about the same
-2 of my sisters are 10 and are twins- they are COMPLETE oposites when it comes to school: one was reading at the 4th grade level in kindergarten while the other didnt really start reading until the 2nd grade, although she's really good at math.
-My baby sister just turned 6 and has just finished kindergarten, so I cant really tell with her.
