Hey everyone-- I've just got a quick question that I hope isn't too common. My sister will be graduating from college at the end of this semester, and I'm wondering if I should put her down as a person in our immediate family that will be in school in 09-10. Now, the only reason I wonder about this is because my parents are telling me that she is enrolled in 09, so therefore she qualifies... that + the fact that there is another question later on that specifically asks for the number of students that will be enrolled between July 1st 2009 and June 30th 2010 (or dates similar to those... can't quite remember). Anyway, I'm just wondering what the right thing to do is here-- technically, yes, my parents are paying for her college right now too, but for the specific "09-10" academic year, she will have graduated. Any help is appreciated!

No, she would have to be enrolled in the 09-10 school year. You would not put her down.

roman is correct. They are asking about the school year 2009-2010, not the calender year 2009. She is not included as one in school for 2009-2010.

Thanks! I have to go back and do a correction now. I know it will probably double my FAFSA EFC, which is unfortunate because 9000 is closer to what my parents can actually contribute…not 20,000, which is ridiculous, haha.

NO…the question pertains the SCHOOL year not the calendar year. The school year is the 2009-2010 school year. Your sister will not be a student during that school year.

If you put her down, your school WILL ask for verification of the school in which she is enrolled, and verification that she is pursuing a degree and is full time. We’ve been asked for this EVERY YEAR for both kids. It typically comes in the fall. If you can’t verify that your sister is a student in Fall 2009 when this is asked…it will be very apparent that you did not answer the question accurately on the FAFSA (or if your sister had planned to go and changed her mind…you didn’t amend your fafsa and resubmit to reflec this…that isn’t the OPs case, but it could apply to someone else).

So…be honest and answer about the SCHOOL year. Answer is NO.
