I was dealing with a string of sickness' sophomore year and ended up missing around a month (in school days) of school. I got sick near finals last semester which really tanked my grades. Anyway now I'm taking medicine and I don't believe it'll be major problem down the road. I received a 3.1 last semester while this semester I'll be getting a 3.5 or 3.3. I did really well freshman year and scored a 3.8. If I get back up to those levels junior year, will colleges understand? I'm aiming for top colleges.

yes. you will need to have your GC mention your illness in your rec.

Yes, The guidance counselor should mention the illness, also the extended illness may provide a little inspiration for college app questions, etc. depending on severity. Work hard to improve your overall GPA and add extracurriculars and good test scores (if not already present) to help chances

Ok my GC already said he would add it to his rec. If they see I’ve done well junior year and the first half of senior year, will they discount my sophomore year? Or at least assign much more weight to my junior year since my GPA then is a true reflection of my abilities?

Few if any schools are going to entirely discount a year, but they will generally assign more weight to your junior year, particularly due to the illness, and they will notice and appreciate the upward trend in GPA. And again, while the GC’s addition will certainly help, even without it colleges are looking at more than GPA for one year.

Ok thanks
