Unfortunately, I have come down with a pretty big cold this week. I am coughing, sneezing, nauseous and feel miserable. This is the first time this has happened away from home.

Could you please share some advice as to what to do when sick in college?

I had the flu when it was going around at my school.

If you don’t feel well enough to go to class, e-mail your professors and they will probably understand. Sleep as much as you can. Drink plenty of fluids. Do pretty much what your mother told you to do.

Sleep, sleep, sleep. Eat when you can and drink lots of fluids. Wash your hands a lot. Tell others to stay away from you so you don’t spread it. Email all your professors and let them know. Go to the school nurse(health center) if you really need to.

Get your friends to bring you food and run your errands i/e pick up or drop off work.

Most professors would rather you not spread your germs in their classes and will be most accommodating.

Don’t go to class. Snuggle in bed and watch TV on your laptop. Take Nyquil, vitamin C (OJ, tablets, etc.), and Mucinex. I like to use echinacea spray for sore throats. Just sleep it off.

Just make sure not to go to class if you’re really ill, and if you’re in the dorms or have a roommate, be nice to them and try to quarantine yourself as best as possible. I had a roommate come down with swine flu a little while ago, and it was a pain in every sense of the word since she wouldn’t admit it and still came over to my side all the time…

My school has a policy where everyone is allowed ONLY two absences for each class. If you go over the two absences then you automatically get withdrawn. A lot of people do get withdrawn from class, it doesn’t even matter if theres a week left. However, there are some professors who are lenient if your sick. I already used my two absences for a few classes but theres only two weeks left in the trimester so if I do get sick I will have to make everyone else sick If there were no absent policy then new story, I’d be in my dorm.
