Okay, this is my first post, but I've been reading post around here for awhile. Getting a B+/A- WILL NOT KILL YOU! You can still get into a good college! I study for tests for about an average for about 2 hours, and I'm lucky if get an A. Grades don't mean everything. ENJOY HIGH SCHOOL!!! My grade point average was like 3.1, not to great but, for me it is. Because I try my best. Just try your best! Who cares if you don't get an A on everything, 10 years it WON'T MATTER!!!!! sorry i just needed to get this out.

Oh, but it will matter. In fact, you will go to hell if you get an A-.

IF you get all B+s and no A-s you wont get into any top school even though a few points may get you a 4.0........

Also OP, some people care about undergraduate education. Some of us want to get into a good school because it will put us on the right track for life. If you go to Harvard and don't squander the oppertunity you can be set for life. If you go to CC and continue to goof off, you may not go anywhere. Where you go to college doesnt matter in the end, but for the next 5 years it means everything as a status symbol and to help you find your first job.

I meant that I have a 3.1, not any special talents, and I just got accepted into a good college. It NOT a top college, but a good college. My parents didn't go to a top college, did fine. My sister didn't go to a top college, doing fine. In fact,I can't think of anyone in my family who went to a "top college" But guess what-THEY ALL TURNED OUT FINE! My ACTs weren't all that great. I have a learning disabilty, I don't like it when people complain about not acing everything. It's just discouarging when people who have all A's and whine when when the get like a A-. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

What if

you go to Harvard and start goofing off

or you go to a CC and do really good?

Some people's self-esteems (i.e. mine) happen to rest on the grades and the top college admission decisions.
At least for me, the reason why I want to get into a top college is not ONLY because I think it will "do me well" in life but rather because my self-esteem requires it. Or rather, I require it for my self-esteem.
And in an Asian household like mine, a B is unacceptable.

sharvas, if you go to Harvard and get Cs you could end up like George Bush (but he went to Yale). If you go to CC and do well you can go to your state school for annother 2 years and graduate with a pretty good degree. CCs are good ways to save money and gain maturity. However, if you do badly in CC, or any college, you have messed up your life. While you have not thrown it away (becasue you can go back to school later) it is very hard to catch up to people who went to top schools and did very well. I just gave the two extremes. There is so much middle ground.

Also, not to say that you cannot do fine going to good schools that arent top ones, but going to a top school puts you in the fast lane. You do not need to be in the fastlane to succeed in the future, but the boost helps you hit the ground running when you graduate and can help you land a better job after college because getting the 1st job is 1/2 the name of your college and 1/2 other work expereince. Furthermore, if I do not get into one good college, all the work I put into in highschool will have been a waste and I could have taken much easier classes and gotten much lower grades and still gotten into my state school.

This is a competitive discussion forum, home of a large number of the USA's overachievers. You will seldom find such a high density of nerds, grade-grubbers or geniuses anywhere else at the high school level, unless you attend a national or international Olympiad (which some forum members have). We all stress about grades because we want top schools. Enough said.

Well unlike you some of us don't want to go to a community college because a community college=a stamp that says "STUPID" on your forehead. Unlike you some of us like to learn and not sit on our ass all day and watch it grow. Unlike you some of us have extremely high standards and have no patience with people who don't either share those standards or perform to them.

This board has gone way downhill.

right on nam3less.
even though I am not one of these ivy league students, i support elitism in todays youth. =D hopefully one day the geniuses can make robots that will be our slaves, and we could all be living in a utopia.

lol, intel :)

see, OP, the majority of the people on these boards aren't satisfied with "fine". I think the prevailing sentiment is that 2nd place is as good as last.

well ur not asian (idk for sure) and u dont have parents breathing down ur neck because they want their child to succeed in life

Second place? You almost won? Huh? What's that called again? Oh right, losing.

i wish i was smart.

Yeah, we are very scary people. Be afraid. :)

We're not all scary. mr_chipset is the only one that bites...

Intel: everybody's smart in their own special way.

craze : ya but some are just not good with books or SAT's which is what matters when it comes down to it =D
