Sick of the words Prestigious and Top

“stellar” ECs and recommendations.

What is a snowflake? I’ve seen people called that here, don’t know what it means?

“Ranking.”…as in should I go to school ranked 9 which I can’t afford or should I go to school ranked 14 with a full ride. If I go to #14 will my life be ruined and will I forever…

snowflakes. cross posted with 42

^“snowflake” refers to the fact that no two applicants are alike. But one can also interpret it to mean (in a snarky way) your uniquely special, one-of-a-kind, exceptionally talented child.

For me it has to be “holistic”
I am actually at awe on how creative people are on coming up with new words to describe old processes.

Apart from that though what make me sad are post of the sort: “I have a bad GPA” only to be revealed later in the thread that the GPA is 3.7 (or more), “I have no good EC’s” to be revealed that actually the ECs are short of winning an Olympiad etc.
I understand that “bad”, “no good” etc means “no comparable” to perfect candidates but still bothers me.

USN&WR
HYPSM

Apparently the forum software tries to automatically lowercase the above unless I add text in upper/lowercase.

Ivy League, Elite, Elite, Elite…

“lower Ivy”
“roll tide”
“I’m older than you and am all knowing”
“Elitist”
“Hypsmc”

Also, the amount of humblebragging here is unbearable, lol.

“higher ranking”

I don’t know xiggi. Crochet doesn’t connote enough “pull” to me. I nominate gaff.

“Harvard of the …(South, West, Upper Michigan Peninsula, etc.)”

“Easy major” (or its variants and associated debates)

“Nightmare” when applied to anything less than something on the order of death/serious injury.

I guess the word that galls me the most isn’t so much used in posts, but rather is implied by the posts themselves, would be “deserved” or some connotation like it. “I (or my child) had a 4. plus GPA and a 2350 SAT and I didn’t get into such and such…I worked so hard”. It implies that they somehow deserved to be admitted to the school. You deserve what you earn or are contracturally owed. The school has no agreement with you that if you work hard and get x grades and scores that they are bound to admit you. Advertisers love this word and it annoys me to hear “you deserve the best!” If I pay for it I deserve it until then I don’t.

“Crap shoot.”
I know it has nothing to do with excrement but it still sounds disgusting.

Also “Podunk U” and “rigorous.”

(I also dislike it when people compare 4.0-scale and 5.0-scale GPAs…as in “ZOMG I’m so smart because my GPA is above 4.0” as if a GPA above 4.0 is “above perfect” regardless of the scale.)

Reminds me of “we’re pregnant,” which also annoys me. I would have been very happy if my husband could have somehow been pregnant along with me, but he got off easy.

Well, I’m glad my snowflakes are at tippy top prestigious schools. We applied early and often. Although the GPA was only 4.8 and SAT 2400 we were admitted because of great hooks and the holistic admission process. See my other thread on taking out 4th mortgages on my house to pay for all this…:)

Perhaps, except that gaff would be too similar to a mistake (gaffe) and that crochet means more than that little diminutive thing used to kill time in the winter. Here’s a picture of Capitaine Crochet …

http://www.groupemodus.com/DATA/ITEM/1883_int~v~La_fete_du_Capitaine_Crochet.jpg

“really smart but doesn’t test well”
