A group from my school got a call yesterday that they made finalist and all the old CC boards have people saying they got calls in advance about regional finals
No phone call here, guess I didn’t make finalist. Oh well, I’m more than satisfied with semis!

I don’t remember which phone number I put down, but past CC posts have stated that some people who got regional finalist didn’t receive any phone calls or emails.

Does anyone know why they selected 498 semifinalists this year instead of 300? Does it mean anything in terms of how much this award is worth?

498 people and its around 300 projects. A lot of the selected are teams so theres gonna be more people than projects

well along with ISEF, this is arguably the most prestigious STEM competition in the nation so getting recognition is quite significant. Getting semifinalist means your project was top 300/1700 (around that at least) which means only 17 or so percent of projects are picked for semis, so it holds a decent amount of weight
I got a call on Sunday notifying that I am a regional finalist! How much is a regional finalist worth? Is there anything I should do to follow up for research?
Intel STS is more prestigious than Siemens.
Anyways, I think USAMO qualification is a little better than Siemens Regional Finalist and making MOP is equal to National Finalist as colleges are aware of the importance of having connections to place in Siemens. Although many people from my school did email local professors the regional finalist from my school did it with her dad.

Yes. They sent out all the calls and emails for finalists on Sunday according to the group at my school who got it
