Siemens Research Question

Hey guys,

Quick question. This summer I was accepted into a paid internship position with a doctor from my local medical center. I met with her yesterday where she gave me some (like 50 pages) of information about the research project we are going to undertake. Additionally, I was told that I would spend some time learning some lab procedure with one of her students and then begin to directly aid her in her research. Additionally, she has one undergrad working on the same project as me. However, would I still be able to submit my research to Siemens?

Thanks,
Robbie

Ooh, that’s tricky. My honest guess is that you won’t be able to, considering the amount of collaboration. I believe that only your mentor and explicit members of your group can participate.

hahaha the answer is emphatically, YES. Everyone always inflates their contributions to their projects and whatnot. Its just what it is. If you try to retain any self-pride, you won’t do well in the competition, i guarantee it.

^that’s just plain pathetic.

Omgitsover9000-

I agree that many (if not most) kids exaggerate what they did and did not do in their research. However, I want to be as honest as I can be in this process regardless of whether I succeed or fail. Plus, kids can’t embellish that much on their projects because mentors have to fill out supplemental material as well…right?

Best Regards,
Robbie

Dude I hate Siemens because of this: so many people submit their mentors work and theres no way of knowing (unless you go to Regional Finals which is where the distinction will be made)

I am doing it and I am doing it mostly by myself in my mentor’s lab (with a partner), but it sucks knowing that other people just have their dad’s do it (which is what happened to someeon at my school last year–he was accepted into Northwestern onnly so dear god!!!)

^You can go ask the doctor to try an ddo an independent project but tahts gonna be kinda hard.

Don’t they look at the mentor supplement prior to Regional Finals?

I thought the mentor only had to fill out a sheet stating their name, address,…,maybe how they helped them and stuff but no actual formal rec.

I could be wrong though—this is my first year doing it too…GL.

Good luck to you as well. Btw you are right…I just saw on the College Board webpage that mentor forums are not even considered until the Regional Finals…wow that is dumb.

Hey guys sry but one last thing. Do I need to talk to my mentor about possibility using the research for Siemens immediately or should I wait till the end.

Bump it up = D

“Plus, kids can’t embellish that much on their projects because mentors have to fill out supplemental material as well…right?”
You think the mentor cares what the kid does? Say the kid wins, more publicity for lab. As long as what directly impacts the mentor (i.e. authorship) remains unchanged, the mentor couldn’t care less what the kid tells him to write. This is why you never see these students as being first authors on papers they produce as a result of the project (most don’t even generate a paper anyways, because the judges are too lazy/don’t care enough to even evaluate the novelty of the idea).
This is besides the point though, to answer your question, yeah you should talk to him, but i guarantee you he won’t care.

Rtgrove, you should talk to your mentor, it’s what I did, but I bet he won’t care.
Now I got a few questions:

Is it harder to win something with a math project in Siemens and Intel? And if I did do a science project, would 3 months be sufficient time? (August, September, October)

Also, for Intel, what would I need to enter in the competition? The regional science fair was a few months ago, in February. I didn’t have a science project back then. But I will after this summer. Can I still participate? Thanks, again.

So if I had a science project done by the end of September, could I submit it to Siemens, Intel ISEF, AND Intel STS all 3?
