1) call up/email 20 professors at local college
2) give resume, meet them, arrange times
3) help them out in their research
4) ask for a copy of the research report
5) use it

Well, in order to do research that has a chance of winning some sort of cash prize, you’ll need the help of a consummate mentor. Finding one willing to work with a high schooler is pretty tough though, so you’ll have to show that you are indeed worth the time and effort, and that you are capable of producing something worthwhile. All of that is up to you.

Start by looking through college websites with professors who are knowledgeable in your intended field of research. See if that professor is willing to mentor you.

For my mentor, I had to interview for the spot. It was pretty competitive and she looked at our transcripts and other academic credentials. Now that I look back, I have no idea why she picked me lol but I had the opportunity to work on projects that were similar to the level of research of the other undergraduates in the lab. And she only selected 1 HS student to take on, which fortunately was me and she helped me write my papers for Intel and Siemens competitions where I was named a semi-finalist for both competitions.

^ How did you get in touch with someone who was taking on highschoolers?

I have no problem interviewing, and my dad works at UCI…
did you have prior knowledge, or was it like “hey, I’m a smart kid, teach me your ways”?

Professors like high school students because having them looks good on grant proposals. They’re supposed to be able to demonstrate how they do community outreach and such.
