I am interested in participating in this competition but I have no idea where to start. I have looked into several possible topics but I still don't have a clue as to what I should do. If I contact a college professor for a research internship, should I already have a topic? And what should I say to him/her when I email him/her? Thanks in advance for the help.

bump.......anyone?

How do you come up with a topic?

You have to have a mentor. I did mine on the effects of herpes simplex one on neurological cancers

Then how is that fair? wont you just do everything your mentor says?

i know u have to have a mentor... but should i contact a professor(who will be my mentor) after i know wat topic im going to do... because i have no idea what i want to do. and when finding a mentor... what do i say to them?

excel... a mentor is not going to do everything for you or tell you what to do each step of the way.... he is there simply to guide you and give you advice

The kids who won last year all had professors of universities as their mentors. I put my dad down, so I have no chance of winning.

well how did you discover your topic? i dont understand how to find a topic.... i mean there's so much to do and the topic has to be specific and it has to be a problem that has never been answered before

I don't think mentors are fair. They give you your ideas.

I never used ANY sort of mentor in all my science fair years.
