for the siemens westinghouse competition, are other factors such as gpa and ecs looked at..or is it just the research? i heard that to get to the semifinalist level its not looked at, but after that (regional finals and all) they do..

I don't understand WHY they would look at anything other than the project...they are evaluating the research not you

intel looks at other factors, siemens evaluates just the research project

i was actually wondering this too. thanks for the info wrath. anyone know how competitive (i know something like 20% become semis in intel) westinghouse is? and, is it the research that's evaluated or is it moreso the quality/analysis of the research? i got good results with my research, but there's not much clinical application, and I didn't exactly find a novel method of treating cancer or anything.

bump! anyone who's been a semifinalist or even anyone who hasn't, any info would be appreciated :D

The competitions are pretty competitive. Being a semi- and finalialist is pretty tough. Many of the finalists are well-accomplished in a bunch of things. SOme are on the olympiad teams (ok, maybe the top 10 or so) and some excell at many other different things. They are presidents of this and that, lettered in this sport, helped this poor country....whatever it may be.

Intel does look at outside factors, but I belive they weigh the project the most. I'm assuming unless you do really bad in school (<3.0) and have low standardized test scores then that plays a part in the project. I think something like 25% of the finslists last year had a perfect score on the SAT. But, there were also people with much lower scores, so it is all possible.

Who knows?

Check out one finalists blog form last year (two years ago?): http://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentoring/blog_amber_hess_sts.shtml

She talks about on January 28th why she was a finlalist and other stuff also.

Also, for intel STS here's the judging process:
http://www.sciserv.org/sts/about/process.asp

much thanks! i'm reading the blog now :D

Intel STS - 30% based on outside information, resume, and student essays. Generally favors behavioral and medicine/health projects.
Siemens Westinghouse - 5% based on information irrelevant to the research project. However, it's through the collegeboard . . .
