*sigh* AP CHEM vs. AP BIO

As you can all imagine course selections for me are around the corner (tmrw).

I really can't decide between these two classes next year. I asked many people and they would simply say "are u better are memorizing or are you better at application."

THE ANSWER TO THAT is "I have no clue."

SO which class would you prefer? DO ADD SOME JUSTIFICATION.

Thank You ....

I prefer chem because 1) there are more labs, 2) the topic interests me more, and 3) the teacher is one of the best teachers at my school.

I have taken/taking both, and I like both classes. If you are a sophomore selecting class for junior year (or freshman for sophomore year), I would say definitely take chem first because the concepts in chem help you in biology a lot.

Hope that helped.

Take both if possible. Both are great fun and very interesting (at least to me...). I don't know which one I would pick if I forced to...have you had intro classes in either chemistry or biology?

It's a Faustian choice at our HS. Last year, 85% of the AP Chemistry students did not pass the AP exam (really poor when compared to other math/science AP tests) and much blame is placed on the teacher not being able to teach.

As for AP Bio, an educated parent I know heard the teacher making a presentation at a community meeting and wanting to ask a provocative question just to get a rise out of the teacher because her speaking style was so drawn out and boring.

To top it off, I just heard the AP Physics teacher is moving out of the area next year.

Things are not looking good for the HS science department.

I'm in the same boat was you. Bio is still a choice for me, but I think I've narrowed it down to AP Environmental and AP Chem. I'm considering Chem because it can knock down an SAT II subject test, since I'll eventually need to send in three.
Decisions decisions..

For your case, AP Bio is a lot more about memorization and learning facts and the ways things work. Think of regular Bio from freshman year but MUCH more complex and into detail. If you took Chem this year (Soph), like me, then think of AP Chem as a lot more detailed and tougher. Plus I heard the AP Chem test is something you don't want to go through..
A bunch of factors to determine.

I was in your position last year and I chose AP Chemistry. And I'm glad I did. I talk to all the AP Bio kids and they all have to stay up late finishing long homework assignments or huge labs. I also like Chemistry much more than Biology. I'm in this dilemma again, now only with Physics B vs. Physics C vs. Biology. I chose Physics C because Biology is just too much work for senior year and I want to become a Chemical Engineer.

Well to clear things up I'm a soph and am currently taking chemistry honors. I don't find the class to be particularly interesting, and it is far too tedious for my tastes. Bio on the other hand was much easier, but was still a pain to memorize the info last year.

Those who have given their opinion mostly say chem... But is the AP exam not extremely difficult? I am going to have a bad teacher next year if i take chem (my current teacher).

How was the AP exam for bio? A few freshman every year at my school take AP BIO and most of them get 5's 0_0

Chem is mathy science.
In my opinion, the Bio exam is much easier. Basically write everything you know on the FRQs... you don't get penalized for incorrect info unless it contradicts something you wrote earlier. More room for error.
