*sigh*

hey everyone. i wanna keep this short and sweet...please tell me what you think. i was deferred by Uchicago EA, and got into Notre Dame EA. i like both schools although they're entirely diff. i havent seen either of them and plan to visit in late feb. do you think i have a chance of getting accepted RD? i heard its a little easier than EA...i'm not sure if thats true tho.

i got a 2100 on the SAT and i did INTEL as well as some other science related things, and have some science and math awards. i have a 98 average and am top 6-7% in my class

when i applied, i though the sci research would help me get into chicago and i also thought it wasnt that popular a school...i guess i was wrong.

so..please tell me what you think. i'd really appreciate it =)

Between 20 and 30% of deferred students are subsequently offered admission. One should contact their admissions counselor, send additional recs or other materials, definitely visit. An interview would be good as well, but it may be too late for that.

The two campuses and the cities they are in are entirely different. Entirely. You should try to visit. I lived in South Bend for a while quite some time ago, although not as an undergraduate. If you think you would like to attend school in Chicago, you may not be so happy in South Bend. (However, you can catch a nifty electric train for a relatively quick ride into Chicago from S. Bend, if you can be satisfied with an occasional visit to the big city.)

First of all, congrats on your Notre Dame admission!

If possible, visit Chicago. If you find you don't like it - no need to worry about being deferred. If you do like it, you will a better position to send an update letter about why you should be there.

Do you have any RD apps submitted? There a number of fine schools with 1/15 application dates.

yeah i applied to princeton, gwu, duke, and carnegie mellon. i know washu's app is due 1/15..i'm considering that although i'm not really sure if i should apply. what other schools have 1/15 deadlines other than nyu and emory?

Hum, varied list. You should be fine at gwu and cmu (unless you are looking at the CSC and then its a tossup), Princeton is a tossup, of course, decentish shot at Duke. The question is, if it came down to ND, GWU and CMU, would you be happy with your options? Have you thought about Carleton College?

I havent thought about carleton college. i know its a liberal arts college in MN and thats about it. haha. if it came down to those 3, i would be happy with my options, maybe not cmu simply b/c i'm a chemistry major. i would love to go to duke, it seems like such an awesome place.

i'm really excited to got west and see UC and ND. i've been to california and texas and most of the states on the east coast. so the midwest should be interesting

Carleton is worth a look if you are a chemistry major - it is VERY strong in the sciences.

about Carleton, and a word of warning in general about small liberal arts colleges: my cousin goes to Carleton, and it seems the only problem is that these schools are very homogenious--white smart kids pretty much. You are also applying to larger schools, like ND and U of C--those schools have much more diversity, which I think is crucial in a school.

and Carleton's weather is probably harsher than Chicago's

Just a note on diversity at Carleton. According to the most recent common data set 26.5% of all the students are a member of a minority group. At Notre Dame that number is 24%. Bigger doesn't always mean more diverse. The other issue to examine with diversity is to what extent the different students mix with each other. If diversity is an issue, talk to current students to see what amount of interaction occurs on any campus you are considering.
