Sigma Alpha Lambda - Honors Organization

Anyone ever heard of them?

Is it worth the $58? Why?

yeah i just got the letter today...i joined alpha lambda delta though, for seventy bucks

what was your gpa?

Got the letter today as well. I got another one (from a different organization) early 2nd semester, but I didn't join it. I sort of think I should have, but whatever. Does anyone know more about these organizations?

I got one too... I wonder if it is worth it?

Me too...I don't know how good it would be on a resume, although it doesn't hurt that we're not required to put any time into our membership, according to the FAQ page on their website.

I joined ALD also because all I had to do was pay the one-time fee. I figure it won't hurt to join this one.

I'm wondering what GPA was the benchmark.

i joined ald, although i didn't go to the induction. i'm thinking about joining sal...but i don't know for sure yet.

well i'll start with the gpa's...
i have a 4.0 cumulative

Nice. 3.76

yea I got the letter today too. I'm going to look into it more before I cough up the $58 though.

i'll cough it up if you do ;)

If you major in something generic where this stuff matters (business, comm, etc.), then it's fine resume fodder. But if you've majored in something where you get jobs based on your talent, then it's pretty pointless.

I don't quite understand what you're saying. What do you mean by talent, and can you give some examples of these jobs that you get based on talent? And to clarify, are there any "generic" majors where "this stuff" doesn't matter?

so are we assuming the benchmark is 3.7 maybe? or 3.5?

Only you and I have cared to share. Most honors things are 3.5. Did anyone under 3.5 get this?

It's a 3.5- that's the boundary for being on the "Dean's List" and consequently the boundary for most of these sorts of things.

Proto- I don't have time at the moment to respond to your questions above, but I will get to them!

Ok. Proto- what I mean by 'generic' majors is majors that are large and non-specific. Like business, or communications, where you could go a number of different ways after college, or academic-type majors like english or philosophy. Basically any major that a) is so big that you need every honor you can get, or b) actually encourages you to list your GPA on your resume. If you're in one of those, then people might actually care that you joined SAL. They still might not, but it's more likely.

Examples of industries where you get jobs based on talent: architecture, landscape, graphic design (FA major), film or television, acting, production design. There are probably some more in here that I'm just not thinking of because I'm not familiar with them. But essentially, if you bring along a portfolio or expect to do an audition with your job interview, they could care less that you were in some honor society, because they are looking for a specific spectrum of talents and skills.

So, you can try to figure out whether it will be any benefit to you later on, and choose based on that. Or you can gamble $58 on that chance that someone, someday, will care.

Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for elaborating.
