Does my son have to fill out a selective service form in order to get the FASA completed?

He has to register for selective service to be eligible for any federal aid. he can select yes on the FAFSA and it will sign him up automatically. If he does not sign up FAFSA will still process but he will be ineligible for aid.

By law all males in the US are required to sign up for the selective service within 30 days of reaching 18 and before the age of 26. Failure to do so makes them liable to (if prosecuted and convicted) face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years. It also makes them ineligible for any federal financial aid, and for federal occupations.

And BTW, there is no draft.

Residents do not have to sign up for it right?

Yes most do.

If my son is 17 and won’t turn 18 until June, 2009–then he doesn’t need to register for selective service on the FASFA, correct? Or, do they expect you to prematurely register, since you’ll be 18 when the FASFA funds are dispersed?
