Significance of Being First-Generation?

does it help with admissions? if you were on the edge would it help you get accepted? does it help get scholarship money, etc? by first generation I mean one's parents immigrated before one was born, and one would be the first in the family to go to college. If it makes a difference, the nationality is Polish.

First gen has NOTHING to do with immigration to the US or nationality. First gen refers to first generation to attend college. I am third generation in the US, but was a first gen college student because my parents only went through HS. A student who is first gen to the US but who’s parents attended college in another country is not considered first gen for college admissions purposes because their parents attended college.

The significance of first gen varies between colleges, it can be a tip factor at some colleges. There are very likely scholarships for first gen students.

ahhh thanks!

First generation matters only at a handful of top colleges where they want more representation from the less affluent. It is the biggest tip when combined with URM status.
