Significance of Late Yale Interview

I just today (March 6th) received an invitation to interview with a Yale alumni in my area. They said the interview needed to be completed by the end of this week. I found this rather strange since I thought the due date for interview reports had already passed. Any thoughts on if this means anything?

Just found out that interview reports were due on February 15th. Should I be concerned?

Relax. I personally would take it as a neutral to good sign, but I’m a glass-half-full kind of person. On a practical level, there’s nothing to be gained from being concerned.

Enjoy the interview.

My son just received a text message yesterday from a Yale Alum to meet for an interview tomorrow evening (March 8th) . He was applied SCEA and was deferred. He sent a letter of continued interest/ update a couple of weeks ago, so maybe that made someone realize that he still was never offered an interview. Better late than never, and hopefully it will go well. Good luck to you @CactusUsername.

There are no fast dates for interviews, though there is an initial due date. Many reasons cause late interviews, including an alumni who agreed to do it initially not being able to complete it. In that case it is assigned to another alum who agrees to do it. I have done them this late in the past. Be happy that an alum stepped up to do it. Good luck.

In case anyone else has this same question in the future:

The interviewer explained to me that they didn’t have enough alumni to interview all of the applicants from my area for the RD round. He got a request from admissions saying that they were seriously considering me as an applicant but I hadn’t received an interview and they wanted more information, prompting a late interview. Not that this is what every late interview means, but definitely a possibility for others in the same boat as me. Best of luck to all!

@CactusUsername - I have been doing interviews for over 25 years. I have requests to do interviews like that once or twice. Sometimes the AdComs need that additional insight to make a decision. Good luck.

Similar thing happened to me. Yale alumni contacted me for an interview for March 22 which seemed extremely late in my perspective but later the interviewer sent me an email saying that Yale requested it be done sooner. So now my interview is March 15th very close to march 30. Could this mean anything ?

To elaborate on what ended up happening:

During the interview, my interviewer told me that he had been contacted to interview me because the admissions office was seriously considering me but needed final confirmation. The interview went really well so I was feeling good about my chances. Ten minutes after the interview, I got a call from the interviewer who was driving back home because he had a couple more thoughts and told me that he was going to give me the highest interview ranking and passionately advocate for the admissions office to finalize my admission. On April 1st I got waitlisted. Honestly couldn’t stop laughing for like 5 minutes, I got into other schools I’d rather go to (didn’t take my spot on the waitlist) so the whole series of events was just really strange. A late interview might mean something, but admissions are still weird as heck.
