I try to keep up with "big picture" Colgate trends.
But, it's difficult for me to discern whether a stat like this is just an isolated #, has to do with some new quirk in gate's admissions policy or indicative of an increasing positive perception of Colgate ?

What is the stat you are curious about? How did the # of ED apps compare to last year and what % did they take? Colgate had always been considered a top school.

“…Karen Giannino, Senior Associate Dean of Admission, said the pool of applicants was also stronger in the classroom, with better overall GPAs and test scores. Applications for ED increased from 400 in 2011 to 466 this year, with an increase of multicultural applications, from 72 to 107…”

My guess would be that strong applicants who want a top New England liberal arts college are getting tired of the tiny, over subscribed, ridiculously competitive schools like Middlebury, Amherst, Williams & Bowdoin. The Ivies too have become absurdly competitive, and even many of the most perfectly qualified applicants need either an outstanding athletic talent or massive luck to get admitted. Colgate is a large liberal arts college, despite it’s university label, and it is a perfect size and an ideal educational environment for kids who don’t want a big university. It’s an outstanding education and is extremely competitive, but it’s still approachable, unlike the cut throat competition of these other top schools. I suspect it will only continue to grow in popularity.
