I'm a rising freshman and this summer, I don't think I'll be able to participate in the ArtSci weekends (or any other similar summer program), meaning I won't get the opportunity to sign up for classes early...is this going to be a significant disadvantage?

I'm also confused by the requirements/cluster system. If, for example, I'm planning on majoring in Environmental Policy and have a AP BC score of 5, would I still need to take other math/calculus classes to fill a cluster?

Finally, a bulk of my schedule is taken up by a freshman program I'm in. I want to be able to take elective classes and introduce myself to totally new concepts, but I don't have much room left in my schedule. Do I need to start working towards my prospective major immediately, or can I take some liberties with the remaining 5 or so credits?

You have to complete 4 area distribution requirements
Natural Sciences (Chem, Physics, etc.)
Social Sciences (Econ, Psych, etc.)
Textual History (History, etc.)
Language Arts (English, other languages, etc.)

To complete each, you must take 8-9 units in the subject. Additionally, two of the tree courses must be in what’s called a cluster, which are two seperate classes that the school has decided are related enough. Each distribution (the things above) have dozens of possible clusters. You have to complete one cluster for each distribution requirement. Your major will count as a cluster, so you only have to complete 3 others.

Arts and Sciences majors are generally around 8 classes (excluding prereqs, i.e. for Econ you need 8 classes but this isn’t counting Calculus and Statistics). You only need to declare your major in your 4th semester, meaning you don’t have to take major classes right away (although many students choose to as they want to make sure they have time if needed to switch majors).

Registering during orientation isn’t a huge deal…especially if you’re doing a freshman program which you should have signed up in advance for. If you’re only needed 2-3 classes, finding something available will be easy to do…just may not be the most convenient times.

(Note…I’m an Engineering student so what I’ve said above may be old/incorrect…check out academic bulletin for up to date info).
