Signing up for classes

OK, so I've looked on SIS, and I seem to be able to enroll in classes already, even though the date is supposed to be August 4th...I've not actually clicked 'enroll' yet, to be fair, but it's let me select classes...anyone know what's happening here? Also, a lot of classes seem to be full already, why is that?

I'm so confused.

Are you an incoming first year? If so, you’ll register at your orientation. The university has set aside a designated number of spots in common classes for each orientation group so that all students have the same chance to enroll in specific sections regardless of what time of the summer they attend orientation. I wouldn’t encourage trying to register independently without seeking counsel first from your advisor; it’s possible you might overlook something and register for the wrong course. I can’t speak to how the process works for transfer students.

Yes, stop worrying about enrollment! The first week is called “class shopping” for a reason – you will get into the classes you want, and if not you have 7 more semesters to try!

jc40, I’m an international student, my orientation session is AFTER signing up for classes, that’s why I’m concerned!

If I read correctly, international students’ orientation is not AFTER everyone else’s but rather theirs (as well as out-of-staters traveling great distances) is reserved as the very last actual session, and it piggybacks right into move-in day. I’m fairly certain this is the case as we considered this as an option for our D because we live about 1500 miles away. You should be fine.

That’s my understanding as well, jc40. There will still be classes available, dreaming. It looks like there are course scheduling workshops on the Thursday of Orientation, at least according to this schedule:

[University of Virginia | Summer Orientation | Schedule | Session L Overview](http://www.virginia.edu/orientation/summer/schedule/sessionloverview.html)

Don’t worry!

Well that doesn’t make any sense to me, because you can sign up for courses on August 4th, but we don’t get to UVA until the 18th…

dreaming92, UVA reserves spaces for each orientation group, at least in classes in which first-years are likely to enroll. It’s not a first come, first served system. Therefore you may look online now, or in early August, and a class will look closed or full. Don’t freak. The enrollment cap will be lifted for your group, and a certain number of new places will open up in each class. Then after you’ve registered, the enrollment cap will be put in place again, and the class will look full until the next orientation group arrives. So, people who attend an early orientation session do not have an advantage over those who attend later in the summer.

Thank you!
